Democratic Seattle Mayor-elect and self-described socialist Katie Wilson’s recent mayoral victory may encourage other “radical” leftist candidates to seek office, according to political analysts.

Wilson, 43, unseated incumbent Democratic Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell on Wednesday. Some analysts explained to the Daily Caller News Foundation that Wilson’s success in Seattle’s mayoral election may inspire more socialist Democratic candidates to run in future elections across the nation. Wilson’s campaign did not respond to the DCNF’s request for comment.

The Seattle mayor-elect has drawn comparisons to Democratic New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, who is also a self-avowed socialist. Wilson has promoted several socialist policies during her mayoral campaign, including expressing support in September for establishing government-run grocery stores in Seattle.

Mamdani has similarly pledged to implement city-run grocery stores in New York City, a proposal which has faced pushback from some other Democrats.

“Mamdani and Wilson will definitely inspire more socialists to run,” Sam Kay, director of external affairs and public opinion at the Manhattan Institute, told the DCNF. “But Tuesday didn’t say ‘be socialist,’ it said ‘be moderate.’ Wilson and Mamdani barely squeaked by in deep-blue electorates, while moderates in Virginia and New Jersey won in blow-outs.”

“More socialists may run, but winning outside of the bluest cities in America in higher turnout, on-cycle elections is a different story,” Kay continued.

The Washington Post editorial board wrote in an op-ed published on Sunday that Wilson — who has notably never held elected office — “has little experience but plenty of bad ideas.” The outlet’s editorial board also critiqued Wilson as being an “activist with even less experience” than Mamdani.

“Wilson may be less constrained than Mamdani,” the Washington Post’s editorial board wrote. “Fellow progressives also toppled the incumbent president of the Seattle City Council and the city attorney while picking up two other seats. Only two of the seven council members have served more than one term. There are not many silver linings here, except that the country may be able to more quickly see the failures of their policies — which could prevent voters in other cities from falling for socialism.”

Political strategist and founder of advocacy organization League of American Workers Steve Cortes told the DCNF he thinks Wilson and Mamdani both have “an openly Marxist worldview.”

“Katie Wilson and Zohran Mamdani are ideological brother and sister,” Cortes told the DCNF. “They are coastal Leftist elites who openly despise America, lie about our values and culture, and share an openly Marxist worldview.”

“The Washington Post may try to split hairs among these radical Leftists, but to normal American citizens, the specific minor differences among the factions of Bolshevism don’t matter that much, really,” Cortes added.

Mamdani publicly congratulated Wilson on her mayoral victory in a Nov. 14 X post, writing that “Seattle is in great hands.” Wilson replied on X that she feels “proud” to “be in the fight” alongside Mamdani “for a democracy on the terms of working people: affordability, housing, safety, and more.”

Thanks, Zohran. I’m proud to be in the fight with you for a democracy on the terms of working people: affordability, housing, safety, and more. From NYC to Seattle: this is your city. #thisisyourcity https://t.co/7GAMkIW6fo

Wilson pledged to appoint a mayoral cabinet comprised of “exceptional leaders whose lived experiences reflect the diversity of Seattle’s Black, Indigenous, Asian and Pacific Islander, Latinx/Hispanic, and People of Color communities as well as that of women, immigrants and refugees, 2SLGBTQIA+ communities, people with disabilities, people of all faith traditions, and residents from every socioeconomic background,” according to her campaign website. She has also vowed to “Trump-proof” Seattle, her website states.

The 43-year-old mayor-elect and her unemployed husband reportedly still receive financial support from her parents, who are both academics.

Additionally, The Wall Street Journal editorial board referred to Wilson as “soft on crime but tough on businesses” in a recent opinion piece.
