DUKE: ICE Just Deported A Heroic Purple Heart Recipient… Who Also Shot A Pregnant Woman

Apologies for the late send today — I thought I would be healthy on Sunday evening and drank some “Dandelion root tea.” Apparently you should not do that if you are allergic to pollen. Seems kind of obvious in retrospect. Nonetheless, I was laid up most of yesterday and was still resting this morning. 

Anyway, on to today’s topic…

DEMOCRATS FIND A NEW “MARYLAND FATHER” 

Democrats found their hero. The shiny face they could put as the poster child for why mass deportations are bad. The replacement for Kilmar Abrego-Garcia, who started as a mere “Maryland father” and quickly became known as an alleged MS-13 human trafficker and domestic abuser:

Army veteran and Purple Heart recipient José Barco. 

Director and producer Morgan J. Freeman (not the one you’re thinking of) tweeted, “ICE deported a Purple Heart U.S. Army Veteran to an unknown location in Mexico.”

Local news reports featured headlines like, “Activists express worries after AZ Purple Heart combat veteran was deported,” and “A Colorado combat veteran who earned a Purple Heart was deported from America, a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesperson confirmed.”

Wow, that’s terrible, right? 

But once again the left found itself defending the wrong guy. Buried in news reports about Barco’s deportation is that he served 15 years in prison for attempted murder after leaving the military. He was just granted parole in January. 

The act that got him locked up occurred in 2009. He had an application pending for citizenship when he fired a gun into a crowd outside a party and struck a pregnant woman in the leg. He was released early from a 52-year sentence. His defense contended he had severe PTSD and suffered a flashback before the shooting, but there aren’t many other details about the incident in public reporting. 

Barco’s service record is worthy of respect. Perhaps in an ideal world he would have had his PTSD properly treated and become a naturalized citizen. But we can have sympathy for veterans’ circumstances while not giving them a free pass for bad — and in this case, violent — behavior. 

Conveniently, now that details of Barco’s arrest record have come to light, this case is now being used by Democrats to question the deportations of convicted criminals. This is why you never give them an inch. It started with Democrats and their allies in the media asserting, “Well, of course people think criminals should be deported, but what about the grandmother who cleans homes and knits in her spare time or the people getting picked up at Home Depot?” Now we’ve quickly reached the “Well, not all criminals need to go” stage of the opposition. 

They keep poking, trying to find the chink in the mass deportation armor. But the Trump admin, much to their credit, has refused to take the bait. 

WHAT ELSE IS ON MY RADAR
