The media is many things, but none of those seems to revolve around caring about the truth. Any days of them doing so are long gone, at least as things currently stand. There are isolated pockets where it matters, I’m sure, and there are probably still some individuals who consider it important, but for the most part, the mainstream media has a narrative, and anything that goes against it is a problem.

And then you have this site that seems to be trying to…I don’t actually know exactly what they’re trying to do, but I will say that if they were trying to blatantly misrepresent the facts of the challenge of Hawaii’s “vampire rule” in order to gin up opposition to the Supreme Court hearing it, they wouldn’t have done anything differently.

It starts with the headline: “Supreme Court Bombshell. DOJ Move Could Destroy Gun Laws in 5 States.”

Of course, this implies that the DOJ’s brief somehow changes state law all on its own, and it doesn’t. That’s why the case is now up to the Supreme Court. Further, it implies that there are a number of gun laws in those five states that could be overturned, which isn’t the case. It’s about one particular measure that’s being challenged.

It doesn’t get better.

The DOJ Supreme Court Hawaii gun law filing has sparked national attention. The Department of Justice argues that Hawaii’s strict rules on carrying firearms in public violate the Supreme Court’s 2022 Bruen decision. If the Court steps in, the case could reshape how states regulate public carry, especially in places like California, New York, Maryland, and New Jersey.

The brief claims Hawaii’s law “effectively bans public carry.” DOJ lawyers say the rule fails the Bruen standard. That ruling stated Americans have a right to carry firearms outside the home unless a state can prove a clear historical tradition justifying limits.

…

Gun control advocates disagree. They warn that expanding public carry could increase gun violence in states with large populations and dense cities. They also point out that the filing focuses on Hawaii alone. Other state laws would remain in place unless the justices issue a broad ruling.

The filing doesn’t change jack squat in and of itself. It’s just the DOJ submitting its take to the Supreme Court. I’m not sure which gun control advocates this particular reporter spoke to, as none are quoted in any way, but if they think this changes the law at all, they’re morons.

Or they’re using AI way too much to do their job. That’s also possible, because AI is pretty stupid on gun stuff.

Regardless, one could look at this story and think that the rule in question is literally anything. They can fill in the blanks with their own worst fears, never realizing that it’s about a rule that assumes a right is prohibited on private property unless specifically allowed–hence the “vampire rule” terminology, since it’s like how a vampire must be specifically invited in–which isn’t how any other right is treated.

When you go to a restaurant, you’re not precluded from saying a blessing over your food unless specifically allowed to by the owner. You don’t have to ask for specific permission to engage in conversation on certain topics with your dining companions. You’re not assumed to leave your rights at the door in any other way, but the law in Hawaii and these other states treat gun rights differently.

But you wouldn’t be able to glean any of that from this “report.”

Instead, you get vague mentions of the measure in the most oblique way humanly possible, a fearmongering headline that overstates the impact, and a complete lack of facts about literally anything else.

Honestly, I don’t know this site as I’ve never seen it before, but holy crap, if this is the best they can produce, then there’s a reason I’ve never heard of them before now, and why I hope I never hear from them again.
