We are constantly subjected to sob stories about illegal immigrants living in fear of deportation, and of a few who have had unpleasant or even horrific experiences.
In a perfect world, I would quite genuinely wish none of these stories were true, either of the illegal aliens who really are working here peacefully and contributing to society, or any of the people living off welfare, enjoying Section 8 housing, or committing crimes. I wish everybody were healthy, wealthy, and wise, and that peace in the valley reigns forever.
But seriously, we don’t live in that world, and very few of the people who are complaining about Trump’s closing the border and enforcing immigration law will outright say they want open borders; they just want to have their cake and eat it too. They want all good things for all people, and have no plan to get there other than to decry what it takes to have a meaningful border.
Big anti-ICE mob in St. Paul, Minnesota, surrounded a house on Tuesday as HSI and ICE arrested an illegal from the house.
The mob then attacked the federal agents which led to them responding with pepper spray and non-lethal ammunition.

Still, I have a modest proposal for the people who dislike the current Trump deportation policies, which admittedly are harsher than many Americans can stomach, despite their presenting no alternatives that will achieve the goals that most Americans voted for, and many of these same people will claim to support in principle, like the Pope.
Pope Leo XIV responding to the US bishops’ statement on the detention and deportation of migrants:
“No one has said that the United States should have open borders. I think every country has a right to determine who and how and when people enter. But when people are living good… pic.twitter.com/1wK9suWlNJ

“No one has said that the United States should have open borders. I think every country has a right to determine who and how and when people enter. But when people are living good lives, and many of them for 10, 15, 20 years, to treat them in a way that is extremely disrespectful to say the least, and there has been some violence unfortunately. I think that the Bishops have been very clear in what they said and I think that I was just invite all people in the United States to listen to them.”
So…the US does not need to have open borders, but it also should not enforce the rules that allow us to control the borders. It is incoherent happy talk.
So what is my proposal to the bleeding hearts, with whom I sympathize in principle because they have warm hearts?
It’s simple:
Allow everybody eligible to self-deport, and even offer them a stipend to leave. Say $ 1,000, which would help them make the trip home or elsewhere. We could even allow them to apply to come back legally. We can impose a time limit where reentry is more difficult, but once that is expired reentry is possible.
Doesn’t that sound a lot better than getting picked up and deported? And since it is voluntary and all legal proceedings and risk of deportation disappear, the laws are enforced with no cruel arrest and deportation processes.
Easy peasy. Threading the needle. We get our immigration laws enforced, which even the Pope, who is critical of our policies, agrees are legitimate, and illegal immigrants don’t go through the painful process of getting kicked out involuntarily. They get time to plan, make arrangements in an unhurried manner, sell whatever property they have to, and even get eventual forgiveness for breaking the law.
Hey folks! Guess what? That is exactly the Trump administration policy, and the only reason why we have all this storm and strife over “cruel” arrests and deportations is that illegal aliens refuse to budge. They not only disrespected our laws when they came, committed identity theft to get jobs, but now they are refusing to accept an “all forgiven” offer and a cash bonus because they don’t believe the rules should apply to them.
In simpler terms, the problem isn’t that Trump is being mean; it’s that illegal immigrants are giving the country the finger.
If our immigration laws are to mean anything, then we must enforce them. Even the Pope agrees with that, despite the fact that every atheist in the world is trying to use his moral authority to argue that we should give every lawbreaker a pass.
Trump is offering an easy way and a hard way. The choice is being made by the people who refuse to accept the easy way.
It’s no different than a criminal who resists arrest complaining about being manhandled. They should have complied when asked to.
How hard is it to understand this basic fact? Apparently very.
Rather than spewing out irrelevant sob stories, open borders advocates should cut to the chase: admit that you are for open borders, or admit that illegal immigrants should leave because they violated our immigration laws.
Nobody needs to face the unpleasantness of being instantly uprooted and having their lives upended. CBP offers them time to plan, arrange things in an orderly fashion, and leave with a bonus. That is eminently fair. Everybody wins.
If people say “No!,” that is their problem. They chose the hard way.
