After developing the 5.45mm Tantal rifle (adopted in 1988), the Radom factory moved on to designing a compact “SMG” version. This would be designated the wz.89 “Onyx”, but never made it into mass production thanks to the collapse of the Communist government in Poland. The first production batch was made in 1991 using a top cover permanently mounted tot he rear sight block with a pivot like on the ASK-74U. This model (which we are looking at today) only lasted for a single preproduction batch, as it was decided to change the design to a removable top cover with a rear sight mounted to the rear sight block and cantilevered rearward. Ultimately only about 200 of the Onyx were made before the program shut down completely.
