Wannabe Chicago Rapper Shot by Armed Citizen After Alleged Carjacking Attempt

I’ve known a lot of musicians in my life, as I’m sure most of you have. Most have big dreams that never come to fruition. Sometimes, they do, though. The guy who used to deliver Chinese food to my house, for example, ended up winning American Idol one year, so yeah, some people achieve something special.

But many of those who achieve success are so focused on their craft that they don’t have time to get engaged in illegal shenanigans.

That doesn’t seem to hold true for rappers, though, as I’ve written a lot about those guys getting involved in shady things and ending up in prison over them.

One Chicago wannabe, though, didn’t just get caught when he tried to jack a car; he got shot for his trouble.

A south suburban teenager who raps under the name “4 Block Lil Mari” has been jailed after prosecutors accused him of shooting a woman during a botched South Shore carjacking that ended with the victim, a concealed carry holder, shooting him as well.

Kamari Bonslater, 17, of Steger, was already on pretrial release for allegedly possessing a machine gun and a stolen vehicle at the time of the shooting, prosecutors said.

The charges stem from a failed carjacking on September 7 in the 6700 block of South Cregier. Chicago police initially described the incident as a drive-by shooting that left a 16-year-old boy in critical condition with three gunshot wounds and a 34-year-old woman shot twice in the leg. It now turns out that Bonslater, who has since celebrated his 17th birthday, was the critically wounded teen.

According to a detention petition, the episode did not play out the way CPD first believed.

Instead, prosecutors say, the victim, a 34-year-old woman, and a 31-year-old female companion were sitting in the victim’s parked car when “multiple individuals” approached and struck up a “brief conversation.”

Prosecutors said Bonslater tried to yank open the passenger door while pointing a gun at the women. The victim, a licensed concealed carry holder, reached for her own firearm, prompting Bonslater to shoot her in the leg before she returned fire, hitting him multiple times, according to prosecutors. She then sped away from the scene.

The victim recognized Bonslater as a local rapper and provided his stage name, which led police right to him.

Because there’s nothing more brilliant than trying to become famous and achieving any degree of notoriety in the local area, and then trying to carjack people. It’s even more dumb to do it when armed citizens are running around, but no one accused wannabe rappers of brilliance.

Bonslater has a YouTube channel with his music. It has nearly 40,000 subscribers, and a couple of his tracks have around a million views, which isn’t too shabby, all things considered, and hints that he might have been able to make it in the music business. And this is on an account that was started in 2020, but only has videos dating back about eight months. That’s a good deal of success on the platform in a pretty short time.

That will apparently be sidetracked by a stint in prison stemming from both the shooting itself and his alleged possession of a machine gun, most likely a switch-enabled Glock handgun.

Somehow, I don’t think he’ll be winning an American Idol-like television context. If he’s really lucky, though, he might get a gig delivering Chinese food.
