Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser announced Tuesday that she will not seek a fourth term, bringing her decade-long tenure leading the nation’s capital to an end in 2027, as reported by The New York Post.

Bowser, who previously served as a DC Council member representing Ward 4, revealed her decision in a video posted on social media.

President Trump CLEANED UP her mess by deploying the troops and immediately exposed her soft-on-crime failure.

“My fellow Washingtonians, for 10 years, you and I have worked together on an ambitious agenda to restore faith in our government and ensure that every DC resident gets the fair shot they deserve,” Bowser said.

She highlighted initiatives her administration pursued, including efforts to “keep DC teams in DC,” increase school enrollment and graduation rates, and invest heavily in housing.

Bowser said the city created 36,000 homes during her time in office, adding that her administration drove unemployment to its lowest levels and completed the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge, which she described as the largest infrastructure project in city history.

Bowser also referenced the city’s recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and said her administration worked “to stand tall against bullies who threaten our very autonomy, while preserving home rule.”

She added that she believes the groundwork has been set for future officials “to reshape and grow DC’s economy, establish DC as the 51st state, and protect our investments in affordable housing, transportation, public safety, and public schools.”

Bowser reflected on her decade as mayor, saying, “When you placed your trust in me 10 years ago, you gave me an extraordinary opportunity to have a positive impact on my hometown. Every day since, I’ve cherished the opportunity and have happily given all my passion and energy to the job that I love.”

She concluded her message by calling on residents to “run through the tape and keep winning for DC” during her final year in office.

It has been the honor of my life to be your Mayor. Together, we have built a legacy of success of which I am intensely proud.

With a grateful heart, I am announcing that I will not seek a fourth term.

Tuesday’s announcement follows months of public debate between Bowser and President Donald Trump over federal efforts to combat crime in the city.

Bowser previously opposed the President’s push to deploy National Guard troops to Washington, but in August she acknowledged the success of the federal crime crackdown, saying she appreciated the additional officers who “enhance what [the Metropolitan Police Department] has been able to do in this city.”

Bowser said the surge of federal law enforcement resulted in “more stops that got to illegal guns” and contributed to fewer homicides, fewer gun crimes, and an “extreme reduction in carjackings.”

Bowser has also raised concerns about federal operations in residential areas, saying there had been a “break in trust” between the community and law enforcement when masked ICE agents appeared in neighborhoods.

The next mayoral election in Washington, D.C., is scheduled for November 3, 2026. Axios reported last month that DC Council members Kenyan McDuffie and Janeese Lewis George are among those considering mayoral campaigns.
