Authorities are investigating a deadly incident after an alleged drunk driver struck multiple people, including a pregnant woman, at a Christmas parade on the Navajo Nation in Arizona on Monday, as reported by Fox News.

According to the Navajo Police Department, officers responded to the scene at approximately 5 p.m. after receiving reports that four people had been struck by a vehicle.

Police said the driver allegedly drove into the parade route as bystanders were waiting for the event to begin.

In a statement released by the department, police confirmed that “life was [lost] during this tragic event as family gathered for this joyous occasion to brighten the holiday season.”

Officials said damage to vehicles and nearby property was also reported as a result of the incident. The driver was taken into custody at the scene and transported to the local Department of Corrections. Authorities have not released the identity of the suspect.

The Navajo Police Department described the incident as a devastating event for the community, particularly given the timing during the holiday season. In a message posted to Facebook, police urged residents to remain vigilant and intervene when necessary.

“A tragic event during the holidays can change someone’s life and hurt families across the Navajo Nation,” police wrote.

“If you see someone who may be impaired, take their keys, help them get home safely, or call your local Navajo Police Department.”

The investigation remains ongoing. The FBI and the Navajo Department of Criminal Investigation are assisting Navajo police as they work to determine the full circumstances surrounding the crash.

Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren confirmed additional details about the victims in a statement shared on social media.

Nygren said those struck by the vehicle included a “young person” who remains in critical condition, as well as a pregnant woman.

“This event was meant to bring joy, unity, and holiday spirit to our community—and is a time for families to come together and celebrate,” Nygren wrote on Facebook.

“No one should have to experience tragedy during a season meant for love and togetherness.”

Local officials also issued statements acknowledging the incident and offering support to those affected. Kayenta Township said the crash occurred “along Navajo Route 591 near the Kayenta Rodeo Grounds.”

“Our primary concern is the well-being of those affected. We ask that you keep them and their families in your thoughts and prayers,” the community wrote on its Facebook page.

Authorities have not announced whether additional charges will be filed as the investigation continues. Police have not released updated information on the condition of all those injured.

The incident has shaken the local community, which had gathered in anticipation of a holiday parade intended to celebrate the Christmas season.

Law enforcement officials continue to urge the public to avoid impaired driving and to report suspected intoxicated drivers immediately.
