Comedian Tony Hinchcliffe pushed back on criticism surrounding his appearance at a Trump campaign event at Madison Square Garden, saying the performance was mischaracterized by the media and ultimately helped the campaign by appealing to voters with a sense of humor.

During an exchange with Jason Calacanis and David Sacks, Hinchcliffe discussed his history performing at Madison Square Garden and explained why the venue mattered to him personally and politically.

“You’ve now sold out MSG how many times?” Calacanis asked.

“Yeah, three Kill Tonys and once just for my stand-up. The Stand Up Show. And the most recent Kill Tony was all after my famous MSG performance heard around the world,” Hinchcliffe replied.

Calacanis joked, “Oh yeah, you spoke at the Nuremberg rally.”

Hinchcliffe responded by explaining why the Madison Square Garden appearance stood out to him.

“So that… That was even more special because it’s already my favorite arena. In fact, the only reason I really did that event was because I was just excited to feel the magic of Madison Square Garden again,” he said.

“Had it been at, you know, what’s the one in Jersey or whatever?”

After a brief exchange over the New Jersey venue, Hinchcliffe said the location was decisive.

“But my point is, if it had even been anywhere else, I don’t even if I would have done it,” he said.

“The magic of MSG mixed with an opportunity to perhaps, you know, get a few people, maybe younger people or whoever that were on the fence to vote what I thought was the right way.”

David Sacks questioned how Hinchcliffe became involved with the Trump campaign event and referenced the controversy that followed.

“Can I ask how did that whole MSG thing come about for the Trump campaign? Because I remember when they asked me to help, and I just threw a dinner, and when you did it, you delivered a killer set that almost like burned the campaign down,” Sacks said.

Hinchcliffe rejected that characterization and argued the performance had the opposite effect.

“Fake news,” he said.

“20% Puerto Rican increase in the state of Pennsylvania, an uptick because they have an unbelievable sense of humor. Puerto Ricans do.”

He said his experience as a comedian gave him confidence in knowing where lines are drawn.

“You know, when you do this every night and all the time, you get a really good feel for what can and can’t get away with. What exactly, where is the actual line?” Hinchcliffe said.

Hinchcliffe also criticized mainstream media coverage of the event, saying journalists failed to research his background.

“I think in retrospect, a lot of people think that mainstream media trying to make it appear like a comedian don’t any of these journalists did their research,” he said.

“With simple Google, you see that I have the most diverse comedy show in the world.”

He cited his long history in comedy roasts as evidence of his approach.

“And that I am, and I push the limits on the whether it be the Tom Brady roast or the Snoop Dogg roast, and all the roasts that I’ve written on, like the last 13 Comedy Central roasts,” Hinchcliffe said.

Sacks summarized the approach as universal.

“Equal opportunity basically,” he said.

Hinchcliffe said media reaction stemmed from his outsider status.

“With a simple Google of my name, you can find out that I was just doing what I did,” he said.

“They weren’t gambling because I’m not mainstream, right? Not Jimmy Fallon or any of these darlings of theirs.”

He said critics expected backlash but misjudged the audience reaction.

“I think that they thought that it was going to make everything look bad,” Hinchcliffe said.

“But meanwhile, I think anybody with a sense of humor at all saw it and goes, I think this is the party with a sense of humor.”

He contrasted that with entertainment embraced by the political left.

“Meanwhile, they have the other side had GloRilla shaking her ass and like everyone’s pretending like that’s cool,” Hinchcliffe said.

“But that is not cool.”
