Rep. Jasmine Crockett, a Democrat representing Texas, said allies and fellow lawmakers have raised concerns about her personal safety as she launches her campaign for the U.S. Senate, as reported by Fox News.

Crockett made the comments during an appearance Tuesday on the Native Land Pod, where she discussed conversations she has had with current and former political leaders since announcing her Senate run earlier this month.

During the interview, Crockett said she spoke with former Vice President Kamala Harris about her decision to seek the Texas Senate seat.

Harris, who previously served as a U.S. senator, expressed support while also stressing the importance of personal security, Crockett said.

Crockett also described discussions with current members of the U.S. Senate, including one unnamed senator who offered encouragement but cautioned her about the risks associated with a statewide campaign.

“There is one member who was like, ‘I think you can do it. Like, I have no doubts,’” Crockett said.

“And that particular member said, ‘My biggest concern is your safety. If you tell me that you are going to take all the precautions that you need to take, then go for it. But I don’t want you to become a sacrificial lamb.’”

According to Crockett, Harris conveyed a similar message. “I can tell you that the vice president, in a very similar vein is, like, ‘The country needs you. I’m going to need you to make sure that you’re as safe as possible,’” she said.

Crockett told podcast host Angela Rye that safety concerns have already prompted changes to her daily routine since launching her campaign.

She said she is in the process of being fitted for a bulletproof vest and made clear that she does not intend to campaign without additional protection.

“It is a sad reality, but I think about the courage that had to exist for those that came before me,” Crockett said.

The Texas Democrat formally announced her bid for the Senate earlier this month, entering a race that is widely expected to draw national attention.

Her announcement sparked immediate criticism and ridicule from Republicans, while some Democrats have also privately questioned her prospects in a statewide general election.

“She might win a primary, but she ain’t winning a general in Texas,” one anonymous House Democrat told Axios, according to a report following Crockett’s announcement.

Crockett’s comments on safety concerns are not new. In June, she publicly expressed doubts about pursuing a long-term career in politics, citing the volume and severity of threats she has received while serving in Congress.

“I did criminal defense work, and I worked with true blue criminals and never had to worry about death threats,” Crockett said at the time.

“And waking up and having to deal with death threats, having to think about where I go, how much security I have, because of all the hateful rhetoric that is circling, and a lot of it is spewed directly from the President of the United States himself.”

Despite those concerns, Crockett has moved forward with her Senate campaign, saying she believes the moment calls for persistence while taking precautions advised by allies and colleagues.

Her candidacy adds another layer to what is expected to be a closely watched Texas Senate race with implications beyond the state.
