Cockpit Audio Released After Video Shows United Flight Sliding Off Runway at Airport in Houston [WATCH]

Newly released cockpit audio and surveillance video captured the tense moments when a United Airlines flight slid off a runway and onto grass during landing at a Houston airport, prompting an evacuation of passengers but resulting in no reported injuries, as reported by The New York Post.

The materials were released on Wednesday as part of a batch of documents from the National Transportation Safety Board related to the March 8, 2024, incident involving United Airlines Flight 2477.

The aircraft, a Boeing 737-8 MAX, had arrived from Memphis, Tennessee, and was landing at George Bush Intercontinental Airport when it failed to stop on the runway.

Approximately 160 passengers were aboard the flight when surveillance footage showed the aircraft struggling to decelerate on a wet runway before sliding off the pavement and coming to rest on the grass.

The plane was left tilted to one side, with its left wing touching the ground.

At the same time, cockpit voice recordings captured a tense exchange between the flight crew. According to the NTSB transcript, Captain Alireza Johartchi reacted moments after the aircraft left the runway.

“Oh my god, I can’t believe that happened. God darn it. I am so sorry,” Johartchi said.

The transcript shows Johartchi and first officer Michael Dickson coordinating with authorities to initiate an evacuation and checking to confirm that no passengers were injured.

“Can’t believe I did this,” Johartchi said to Dickson. “Sorry, man, to get you into this mess.”

The captain also expressed concern that passengers and bystanders were recording the incident.

“Frickin’ people man taking videos… Ah, we’re gonna be all over social media,” Johartchi said, according to the transcript.

All passengers were evacuated from the aircraft without reported injuries.

An NTSB performance study included in the document release found that the Boeing 737 did not sufficiently decelerate before the crew attempted to exit the runway.

According to a report cited by the Houston Chronicle, Johartchi said he became concerned when the aircraft was not slowing adequately with approximately 1,000 feet of runway remaining.

The report stated that the captain applied greater brake pressure in an attempt to steer the plane toward a taxiway. As he did so, the fuselage and rudder brake pedals began to shake violently, complicating efforts to maintain directional control.

Despite those efforts, the aircraft continued sliding and ultimately exited the runway surface.

The NTSB said the investigation into the incident remains ongoing and that no official cause has been determined.

Investigators are continuing to review aircraft performance data, crew actions, and runway conditions at the time of the landing.

United Airlines has not announced any disciplinary action related to the incident, and the NTSB has not issued safety recommendations tied to the case as of this release.
