Vice President J.D. Vance criticized what he described as far-left efforts to undermine federal immigration enforcement, arguing that radical rhetoric has fueled hostility toward Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers who are carrying out deportations of criminal aliens admitted during the Biden-Harris administration.

Vance made the remarks while addressing concerns about violence directed at law enforcement, saying recent incidents should be viewed in the context of what he called deliberate political agitation against ICE officers.

“First of all, of course, nobody wants an American citizen to be killed. This is absolutely a tragedy, but it’s a tragedy of the making of the far left,” Vance said.

“They have radicalized a very small segment of the population. Taught them that ICE agents are engaging in why in wide scale violation of people’s rights.”

Vance rejected that characterization of ICE’s mission, saying federal officers are enforcing immigration law by removing dangerous individuals who entered the country illegally.

“What our ICE officers are doing is deporting the millions of criminal aliens that were let in during the Biden administration,” he said.

Vance said political leaders should be clear about the scope of illegal immigration in the United States and support those tasked with enforcing the law.

He urged Democrats to publicly back ICE officers rather than criticize them.

“So number one, we have to say, as a matter of leadership, and I would appreciate if the Democrats would join me on this, let’s be honest about the fact that we have way too many illegal aliens in this country,” Vance said.

“Our ICE officers should be supported in doing their job.”

He accused far-left activists of attempting to intimidate law enforcement through tactics designed to obstruct operations and encourage harassment.

“You’re trying to actually marshal the far left lunatic fringe to engage in doxing to try to make it impossible for them to enforce the law, and in some cases, actually to engage in acts of domestic terrorism against our law enforcement officers,” Vance said.

Vance said the administration’s approach moving forward would focus on strengthening the ability of federal agencies to enforce existing laws, rather than retreating in response to political pressure.

“When you talk about different plans, different protocols, different policies, I forget exactly how you asked the question,” he said.

“Here’s the simple fact, what we’re going to do is make it easier for the American people’s administration to enforce the American people’s law.”

He argued that Democratic leaders bear responsibility for rhetoric that he said has inflamed tensions and endangered officers in the field.

“And that means that Democrats have to stop rallying the mob against legitimate law enforcement operations,” Vance said.

Vance said the administration plans to take a more aggressive posture toward individuals and groups that incite violence or fraud connected to attacks on law enforcement.

He pointed to the creation of a new Assistant Attorney General position at the Department of Justice as part of that effort.

“And that means that we are going to get tougher, and that’s what this AAG position is about,” Vance said.

“We’re going to get tougher at the people who are defrauding the United States by inciting violence against our law enforcement officers.”

Vance said work is already underway at the Department of Justice and will be expanded under the new leadership role.

“That’s one of the things that we’re going to do,” he said.

“We’ve already started that work at the Department of Justice, but we’re going to keep on doing it, and this new AAG position is going to kick that into high gear.”
