According to an arrest warrant issued Friday, Busfield is accused of engaging in unlawful sexual conduct with a pair of 11-year-old twins while directing the Fox television series “The Cleaning Lady” in 2024.
One of the alleged victims told investigators that the incidents began when he and his brother were 7 years old, according to the affidavit.
The investigation began in November 2024 after a doctor at the University of New Mexico Hospital contacted police to report suspected sexual abuse and grooming involving the minors, the warrant states.
At that time, the Albuquerque Police Department declined to pursue charges.
The case was later reopened in September 2025 after one of the children disclosed to his counselor and then to a pediatrician that Busfield “touched him on his penis and bottom,” according to the affidavit.
The warrant further alleges that Busfield instructed the children to call him “Uncle Tim” and engaged in tickling them on their stomachs and legs.
During a phone interview with investigators in November, Busfield acknowledged that physical contact may have occurred while filming the series.
According to the affidavit, he told police it was “highly likely” he had “physical contact” with the twins.
“I don’t remember those boys,” Busfield also said, according to the affidavit. “No, I don’t. I don’t actually, I don’t remember it, if it happened. I don’t remember overtly tickling the boys ever, but it wouldn’t be uncommon for me.”
Busfield also reportedly told investigators that Elodie Yung, the lead actress on “The Cleaning Lady,” told him the twins’ mother was seeking “revenge” because the children were not invited back for the show’s final season.
The allegations remain under investigation.
Busfield has accumulated more than 700 combined credits as an actor, producer, and director across television and film.
He is widely known for his role in several seasons of “The West Wing,” as well as appearances in “Field of Dreams,” “Stripes,” “Revenge of the Nerds,” and “Thirtysomething.”
Busfield married actress Melissa Gilbert in 2013. The couple does not have children together. Gilbert, 61, is not accused of any wrongdoing.
In November, Gilbert posted on Instagram, condemning child sex abuse following comments by Megyn Kelly regarding convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
