Venezuelan Illegal Immigrants Arrested in Minneapolis Ambush of ICE Agent [WATCH]

Three men have been arrested in Minneapolis and are facing federal charges following what authorities described as an “attempted murder” of a federal immigration officer during a law enforcement operation on Wednesday night, according to the Department of Homeland Security, as reported by The New York Post.

DHS officials said the suspects — Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis, Alfredo Alejandro Ajorna, and Gabriel Alejandro Hernandez-Ledezma — are all illegal immigrants from Venezuela who entered the United States during the Biden administration.

All three men are currently being held in the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

“What we saw last night in Minneapolis was an attempted murder of federal law enforcement,” DHS Secretary Kristi Noem said in a statement.

“Our officer was ambushed and attacked by three individuals who beat him with snow shovels and the handles of brooms. Fearing for his life, the officer fired a defensive shot.”

Noem also placed blame on local and state leadership, saying Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz have failed to maintain control in the city.

“Mayor Frey and Governor Walz have to get their city under control. They are encouraging impeding and assault against our law enforcement, which is a federal crime, a felony. This is putting the people of Minnesota in harm’s way,” she said.

According to DHS, the incident began when ICE agents attempted a targeted traffic stop involving Sosa-Celis. Authorities said he fled in his vehicle, struck a parked car, and then attempted to escape on foot.

Federal agents caught up with him, and during the encounter, he allegedly assaulted the officer.

While the agent was engaged with Sosa-Celis, the two other suspects reportedly emerged from a nearby apartment and joined the attack. DHS said all three men used snow shovels and broom handles to assault the ICE agent.

During the struggle, the officer fired a defensive shot, striking Sosa-Celis in the leg.

DHS officials said Ajorna and Hernandez-Ledezma both entered the United States illegally in May 2023. Ajorna was later issued a final order of removal by an immigration judge after failing to appear for a scheduled hearing.

Hernandez-Ledezma, according to DHS, had been classified as a non-enforcement priority under federal policy at the time.

Sosa-Celis entered the United States illegally in August 2022, DHS said. He had previously been arrested in Minnesota for driving without a license and for providing false information to a peace officer.

DHS said state authorities released him before ICE was able to place a detainer on him.

The attack occurred amid heightened tensions in Minneapolis following the Jan. 7 shooting death of Renée Good, a U.S. citizen who was killed by an ICE agent during a separate enforcement action.

That incident sparked protests and criticism of federal immigration enforcement in the city.

Following Wednesday’s ambush, protests continued in parts of Minneapolis, with demonstrators calling for ICE to leave the city.

Authorities said some protesters clashed with federal agents, prompting a law enforcement response to maintain order.

Federal officials said all three Venezuelan nationals will face charges related to the attack on the ICE agent. Specific charges have not yet been announced.

The men remain in ICE custody as the investigation and prosecution move forward.
