Newly released body camera footage shows how a routine traffic stop in North Miami Beach, Florida, escalated into a high-speed pursuit, a multi-vehicle crash, and felony charges for a 22-year-old driver.

According to North Miami Beach Police, the incident began on Sept. 17 when officers conducted a traffic stop involving a white Honda in the area of Northeast 19th Avenue and 172nd Street.

Police said the vehicle was pulled over due to dark window tints that appeared to be in violation of traffic regulations.

When officers approached the vehicle, they identified the driver as Jonathan Rivas, 22.

Police said officers immediately detected a strong odor of marijuana coming from inside the car.

Based on that observation, officers asked Rivas to step out of the vehicle while they conducted an inspection.

Body camera footage captures officers questioning Rivas as he stood outside the car.

“You said there is no drugs or nothing in the car, right?” an officer is heard asking.

Rivas initially appeared cooperative but told officers he was experiencing anxiety during the stop.

“I have anxiety, bro,” Rivas told officers.

Police said Rivas eventually appeared to calm down but refused to answer additional questions during the encounter.

Officers continued speaking with him while another officer searched the vehicle. According to authorities, Rivas remained silent for approximately 20 minutes despite being addressed directly by officers.

“You know you can talk, right?” an officer asked.

Rivas did not respond to the question, according to police. Moments later, the situation changed dramatically.

Body camera footage shows Rivas suddenly shoving an officer before breaking away and jumping back into his vehicle.

He then fled the scene, accelerating away from officers as patrol units moved into pursuit.

Police said Rivas drove at extreme speeds while weaving through traffic.

According to authorities, he reached speeds of up to 94 miles per hour as officers attempted to follow him through city streets.

The chase ended a short time later near the intersection of Northeast 18th Road and Miami Gardens Drive.

Police said Rivas crashed into several vehicles, bringing the pursuit to a halt. After the crash, officers said Rivas exited his vehicle and attempted to flee on foot.

Multiple officers pursued him, and within moments, four officers were able to catch up to him.

Body camera footage shows officers taking Rivas to the ground as they worked to restrain him.

“Give me your other hand! Give me your [expletive] hand!” an officer can be heard yelling during the arrest.

Rivas was placed in handcuffs at the scene.

Police said no serious injuries were reported among officers or bystanders involved in the crash, though several vehicles sustained damage.

What began as a traffic stop that could have resulted in a citation for alleged illegal window tints instead led to multiple felony charges.

According to North Miami Beach Police, Rivas now faces charges that include battery on a police officer and resisting arrest.

Authorities also addressed the vehicle search that initially occurred during the traffic stop.

Police said officers located empty baggies and glass pipes inside Rivas’ car. As a result, an additional charge was added to his record.

Police emphasized that the body camera footage documents the sequence of events from the initial stop through the pursuit and arrest.

Officials said the incident highlights how quickly routine encounters can escalate when suspects choose to flee or resist officers.

Rivas was taken into custody following the arrest. Court records were not immediately available detailing his next court appearance or whether he has retained legal representation.

North Miami Beach Police said the investigation into the incident is complete and that the body camera footage has been released as part of standard transparency procedures.
