Former first lady Michelle Obama explained her fashion philosophy in a round table conversation released Sunday.
“If I hear of someone whose fashion that I like and I know that they’re a person of color, I try to make it a point, but the clothes have to be available,” Obama said, in response to the question. “What can everyday women be doing to support designers of color?”
“You know, I think we could do some more to think about that balance in our wardrobes, you know, what does our closet look like and who’s in it? Who are we supporting in it? You know, and I think if you have the money to buy Chanel, then you have the money to buy everybody, and so, let us be mindful, I think would be my advice.” (RELATED: Michelle Obama Lashes Out At White People During Interview For New Book)
What ever happened to “buying clothes because they look good”? Are we still allowed to buy from white designers, provided their t-shirts were put together by child slaves in Asia? I question Obama’s approach.

“I wear something and people start noticing it so that they’ll start noticing the people who are doing the work. So who else needs an opportunity? Who else needs a glow up? Who else do we need to know about? They’re all these young black designers, young designers, immigrant designers, women designers, up-and-coming designers … Me wearing them could change their life. It says something more about who we are as a country. All of that was purposeful,” said Obama of her style as first lady. Obama should apply this standard to all of her purchases, for the sake of consistency. A few suggestions:
- Get rid of that iPhone and Macbook. Apple was co-founded by Steve Jobs (white passing) and Steve Wozniak (Polish, but I’m not sure how strict Obama is with regards to ethnic whites). Instead, opt for Huawei or Foxconn devices. Or two tin cans connected by a string.
- No more Coca-Cola. Confederate Colonel John Pemberton invented the original recipe for the drink. Asa Griggs Candler (white) founded the Coca-Cola Company and brought it to prominence.
- Cut out any salad dressing, pasta sauce, pizza, or popcorn produced by Newman’s Own. Actor Paul Newman founded the brand, which donates 100% of its after-tax profits to charity, with a focus on supporting children. But Newman was white. Sorry, kids.
