Democratic California Rep. Linda Sanchez appeared to slam the Affordable Care Act (ACA) during a Ways and Means Committee hearing with healthcare CEOs Thursday.
While questioning Gail Boudreaux, the president and CEO of healthcare insurance company Elevance Health, Sanchez shared a personal story about her struggles with her health insurance.
She recalled that following a knee replacement surgery, her orthopedist instructed her that it was “critical” she immediately obtained physical therapy.
“I’m a member of Congress and was on the phone battling with my own insurance company,” Sanchez said. “Which by the way, members of Congress, to dispel any belief out there that we have the best healthcare in the world, I buy my healthcare off the D.C. exchange.”
Members of Congress and their staff are usually required to obtain insurance through the ACA, commonly referred to as “Obamacare,” according to the Office of Personnel Management. (RELATED: 76 Republicans Vote To Keep Carveouts For Groups Who Do Child Sex Changes In Spending Package)
She claimed that insurance companies have been working against their patients.
“They’re purposely denying claims so that they’re forcing people to prolong their care, which leads to worse outcomes,” she said.
The ACA was signed into law in March 2010, and its stated goal was to make health insurance more widely available to Americans.
This included expanding Medicaid and providing access to insurance for those with a preexisting condition.
A 2024 study from the Committee to Unleash Prosperity found that the ACA resulted in increased premiums and millions of Americans losing their insurance plans, the Daily Caller News Foundation previously reported.
The Daily Caller reached out to Sanchez’s office for comment but did not receive a response prior to publication.
The Caller also reached out to Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith for comment but did not receive a response prior to publication.
