President Donald Trump has pointed to a sharp decline in illegal border crossings since returning to office in January 2025, saying enforcement measures put in place by his administration have significantly reduced unlawful entries into the United States.
According to the administration, border crossings are down by more than 99 percent following the implementation of new policies aimed at sealing the border.
Federal officials have attributed the decrease to a shift away from the policies of the previous administration and toward stricter enforcement of immigration law.

Despite the decline, authorities continue to deal with the consequences of the prior four years, during which millions of migrants entered the country under the Biden-Harris administration’s open border policy.
Officials have said those entries continue to affect law enforcement and public safety, particularly in border states.
Texas remains one of the primary enforcement zones as state and federal authorities confront human smuggling operations tied to illegal border crossings.
This month, Texas Department of Public Safety troopers were involved in a high-speed chase with a suspected human smuggler in Starr County.

According to DPS, the pursuit began when troopers attempted to stop a vehicle driven by Silvano Garcia.
Garcia was later charged with evading arrest and human smuggling.
During the incident, authorities said an illegal alien, identified as a minor from Honduras, was apprehended and turned over to U.S. Border Patrol agents.
DPS officials said Garcia initially stopped his Chevrolet Tahoe briefly, allowing the minor to exit the vehicle before fleeing the scene.
Troopers pursued the vehicle at high speed until Garcia crashed into a fence.
After the crash, Garcia and a passenger, identified as Lazaro Berrera, fled on foot.
Troopers chased both individuals and took them into custody.
Authorities said Garcia and Berrera were each charged with evading arrest and human smuggling of a minor.
Law enforcement officials noted that incidents involving human smugglers attempting to evade arrest are common in Texas due to its location along the southern border.
During the previous administration, border communities saw a significant increase in smuggling activity as large numbers of illegal aliens entered the country.
Last month, The Gateway Pundit reported on another high-speed pursuit involving DPS troopers and a suspected smuggler transporting 10 illegal aliens.
That chase ended when the suspect’s vehicle crashed into a commercial vehicle. No additional details were released regarding injuries in that incident.
State and federal officials have said the renewed focus on border enforcement under President Trump has allowed law enforcement to regain operational control in areas that were overwhelmed in prior years.
The administration has emphasized that while crossings have declined dramatically, efforts continue to address criminal activity connected to illegal immigration.
The Trump administration has framed its border actions as consistent with constitutional responsibilities assigned to the federal government.
Administration officials have pointed to Article IV, Section 4 of the United States Constitution as the basis for federal authority to secure the border and protect states from large-scale unlawful entry.
“The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government, and shall protect each of them against Invasion; and on Application of the Legislature, or of the Executive (when the Legislature cannot be convened) against domestic Violence.” Article IV, Section 4 of the United States Constitution.
Federal officials have argued that the provision places an obligation on the executive branch to act when states face sustained pressure from illegal crossings and related criminal activity.
The administration has said its current policies are designed to meet that obligation while supporting state and local law enforcement.
As enforcement operations continue, Texas authorities have said cooperation with federal agencies remains central to addressing human smuggling networks and preventing minors and other vulnerable individuals from being exploited by criminal organizations.
Officials have not released additional details on the ongoing investigations involving Garcia and Berrera, but both remain in custody as their cases proceed through the legal system.
Border Patrol officials confirmed that the minor from Honduras was processed according to federal procedures.
The administration has indicated that border security operations will continue at their current pace, with an emphasis on preventing illegal crossings, disrupting smuggling operations, and enforcing federal immigration law nationwide.
