There are two stories happening right now involving Minneapolis. One involves a shooting by federal agents of a protester. The other is a political battle of wills between federal officials led by the Trump administration and Minnesota officials and progressives everywhere. The two stories are deeply connected at this point mostly thanks to Democrats who are running the BLM playbook in Minneapolis and especially with the two shootings that have happened there.
Just to put this in perspective, two weeks ago 13 people were shot in Chicago over the weekend and two of them died. I don’t know the names of the people who were killed or really anything about them and neither does anyone else. I’m sure there are people who care about them but those people aren’t elected officials trying to score points against the Trump administration so they aren’t going to be on the news.
Oh, but those shootings are private matters that don’t involve police. Well two police officers were shot by a murder suspect in Corpus Christi last week and one is still in critical condition. You haven’t heard about them (unless you live in Texas maybe) because, again, that’s not the thing we’re being told is the only thing that matters right now which is ICE in Minneapolis.
Oh, but those were cops who got shot. We’re only interested in people shot by law enforcement. Well, two people were shot in Phoenix yesterday by police and one of them died. The family claims the police shot the wrong guy. This may be a case of misconduct of some kind I don’t know. You probably haven’t heard about that either unless you live in Phoenix.
I could go on but hopefully you get the idea. There are all sorts of shootings taking place around the country every day and none of them are getting the Zapruder film treatment from the NY Times and the Washington Post except for the one that matters to elected Democrats and progressive activists. That one is sucking up all the oxygen in the room because the shootings can be blamed on the Trump administration. That’s what makes all the difference between knowing everything about the shooting and not even knowing it happened at all.
Minneapolis and the Pretti shooting in particular have become so potent on the left that wannabe presidential candidates are now visiting the scene:
Democratic congressman Ro Khanna visited Minneapolis on Monday, and spoke with “dozens” of people at the makeshift memorial for Alex Pretti. Speaking to the Guardian, Khanna said he was struck by the “multi-racial coalition” that came to grieve and express their anger at the immigration enforcement surge in the city. “Many people were not immigrants, but third or fourth generation Minnesotans,” the California lawmaker noted.
I’ve shared my take on the two shootings already. You can agree or disagree and I might be completely wrong, but it’s pretty clear that what matters most to a lot of people on the left is not just justice for Pretti but getting the win over Trump. A lot of them seem to think they finally have the win they’ve wanted for so long. Here’s Jonathan Chait declaring victory over the Trump administration and praising the Minneapolis resistance for making it happen.
Of the many lessons to be drawn from the administration’s retreat in Minneapolis, the most important is that Donald Trump can be stopped.
He spent his first year acting as though the 2024 election were the last time he would ever have to give a thought to public opinion. Now the myth that Trump is invincible has been exploded…
Trump’s retreat in Minneapolis is a stinging defeat for the national conservatives, the Republican Party’s most nakedly authoritarian faction…
Trump’s capitulation would never have occurred if not for the heroic, disciplined resistance in Minneapolis. Faced with something like an occupying army that was systematically flouting the law, the people of Minneapolis thrust its abuse into the public eye, raising the political cost of Miller’s war until enough Republicans decided that they couldn’t bear to pay it.
I think it’s fair to say that Trump has softened his tone a bit and has backed away from the “domestic terrorist” language used by Noem and others. It looks like some ICE agents are being removed including Greg Bovino who is no longer running things in Minneapolis. However, Tom Homan is now in Minneapolis meeting with Gov. Walz. ICE doesn’t appear to be leaving completely, though I guess that could change. It just seems to me that maybe Chait is declaring victory a little early. Trump is still the president. ICE is still operating. Not that much has changed beyond the momentary sense that Democrats are in control of the national conversation.
An some people are getting really carried away with that sense of power. Here’s the Bulwark calling for Nuremberg trials as if Dems had just defeated the Nazis in WWII.
…the Minnesota attorney general should create a task force whose sole purpose is to gather footage and testimony about law-breaking on the part of DHS agents and bring as many criminal cases as the evidence warrants.2
In addition, citizen groups in Minneapolis should bring as many civil suits against the government and individual government employees as the evidence warrants and the law permits. There should be an avalanche of litigation burying every member of the federal government who so much as jaywalked in Minneapolis over the last several weeks.
And if, at some point in the future, the opposition takes power at the federal level, then it should seek legal accountability for the government officials who ordered, organized, and then covered up for these crimes.
We will need an American Nuremberg.
Democrats don’t want justice for one man who was killed in Minneapolis, they want vengeance for everything. Call me crazy but I don’t think and handful of shootings, some of which could potentially result in charges, are directly comparable to WWII. This wasn’t D-Day. You aren’t going to be hanging anyone from the White House flagpole. Maybe tone it down a notch.
