John Fetterman Urges Trump to Fire DHS Secretary Noem After Fatal Minnesota Shootings

Sen. John Fetterman, a Democrat from Pennsylvania, publicly called on President Donald Trump to remove Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, citing recent deadly shootings in Minnesota and accusing her of failing the department’s mission, as reported by Fox News.

In a Tuesday post on X, Fetterman made a direct appeal to the president, tagging both @POTUS and @realDonaldTrump. “I make a direct appeal to immediately fire @Sec_Noem,” Fetterman wrote.

“Americans have died. She is betraying DHS’s core mission and trashing your border security legacy. DO NOT make the mistake President Biden made for not firing a grossly incompetent DHS Secretary,” he added.

The remarks came amid heightened scrutiny of federal immigration enforcement actions in Minnesota, where the fatal shootings of U.S. citizens Alex Pretti and Renee Good have drawn national attention.

The shootings occurred during a period of stepped-up federal activity tied to immigration enforcement operations in the state.

Fox News Digital reported that it reached out to the White House for comment on Fetterman’s demand but did not immediately receive a response.

Fetterman’s public criticism stands out among Democrats, many of whom have taken a more uniformly adversarial approach toward the Trump administration’s immigration agenda.

The Pennsylvania senator has frequently positioned himself as more pragmatic on border and enforcement issues, at times breaking with progressive elements of his party.

In recent weeks, Fetterman has urged Democrats to steer clear of calls to abolish U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, arguing that such proposals are politically and practically flawed.

His comments followed a broader debate over the Trump administration’s efforts to increase enforcement actions against illegal immigrants across the country.

In a statement issued Monday, Fetterman addressed the Minnesota shootings directly. “Ms. Good and Mr. Pretti should still be alive. My family grieves for theirs,” he said.

He also criticized the ongoing federal operation in Minneapolis.

“The operation in Minneapolis should stand down and immediately end. It has become an ungovernable and dangerous urban theatre for civilians and law enforcement that is incompatible with the American spirit,” Fetterman said.

Despite his criticism of the operation and DHS leadership, Fetterman reiterated support for certain enforcement principles.

“As a very pro-immigration Democrat and Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Border Management, I believe our nation deserves a secured border and that we should deport all criminal migrants,” he said.

“I also believe there needs to be a path to citizenship for those hardworking families who are here.”

Fetterman also made clear that he does not support dismantling ICE.

“I reject the calls to defund or abolish ICE. I strongly disagree with many strategies and practices ICE deployed in Minneapolis, and believe that must change,” he stated.

The comments reflect growing political tension surrounding immigration enforcement under the Trump administration, particularly as deadly incidents intersect with federal operations on the ground.

Whether Fetterman’s appeal will prompt any response or action from the White House remains unclear.
