The White House is hosting parental rights groups and education organizations on Thursday to celebrate National School Choice Week, the Daily Caller learned.

Education Sec. Linda McMahon will be joined by Bishop Thomas Daly from the Bishop of Spokane, along with representatives from America First Policy Institute, Defending Education, American Legislative Exchange Council, Defense of Freedom Institute, Project Baltimore, ACE Scholarships and Mother of School Choice Beneficiary, a White House official shared with the Caller. In honor of National School Choice Week, the White House unveiled a new website highlighting Trump’s progress on the education initiative. Under Trump’s “Big Beautiful Law,” the Federal Education Freedom Tax Credit was established, which allows taxpayers to get a credit of up to $1,700 per year to go towards an education of Americans’ choices. States must opt-in to the program to make their residents eligible.

Half of the states have opted-in to the program, according to the new White House website. Those states include Florida, Virginia, Ohio, Texas and Oklahoma. States like California and New York have not. The website urges parents to petition their governors to take advantage of the program.

“Every child deserves access to an education that equips them to succeed — not one limited by their ZIP code, family income, or government-imposed barriers,” a White House official told the Caller about the administration’s message on the topic. “Families should have options — public, charter, private, faith-based, magnet, online, homeschooling, or career-focused pathways — that reflect their values and prepare students for success.”

During the Biden administration, a wave of school choice initiatives were passed by various red states. Arkansas, Florida, Iowa, Utah, South Carolina and Oklahoma all signed legislation into law during 2023 that allowed at least some students, if not all of them, to be eligible for taxpayer funded vouchers or a tax credit. Those credits, under state laws, can be used on education expenses such as private school tuition, textbooks and transportation.

In other states, like Texas, school choice legislation stalled, although Republican Gov. Greg Abbott finally signed legislation into law in 2025 after a fight with the state Congress.
