Sen. Tommy Tuberville said election systems tied to Venezuela pose a serious threat to democratic integrity and argued that the United States must abandon electronic voting machines in favor of paper ballots, one-day voting, and strict voter identification requirements.

Tuberville made the remarks during an exchange with Benny Johnson, who asked about President Trump’s recent comments regarding Venezuelan election technology and the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro.

“President Trump’s been posting a lot about Venezuelan election theft technology after Black bagging. Nicolas Maduro,” Johnson said.

“Do you think that he’s going to sing like a canary? Do you think that he’s the man who knows where all the bodies are buried when it comes to this topic?”

Tuberville said the origins of the voting technology long predate Maduro and trace back to Venezuela’s former president Hugo Chavez.

“I don’t think there’s any doubt you know that,” Tuberville said.

“Now, this didn’t start under Maduro. It started under Hugo. Hugo Chavez, the president before that because he, he got recalled in an election, and he came up with these, this system of machines that he was able to put out within his country and got himself elected.”

Tuberville said the technology was later exported internationally.

“And then when that happened, he said, heck, we’ll just do this internationally,” Tuberville said.

“So they started selling them all over the world, and that’s how we ended up with them here.”

According to Tuberville, control of the systems remains centralized abroad.

“And now they’re all controlled by, you know, a tech group in Venezuela,” he said.

Tuberville said he hopes Maduro will provide information about how the systems operate.

“But I would hope that he would be singing, as you said, like a canary, and telling people what’s really going on,” Tuberville said.

He argued that concerns over voting systems were a motivating factor behind President Trump’s actions.

“I would think that this is a lot of why President Trump went in there, because he knows the world cannot survive with crooks running the voting systems, not just in our country, but all all over the world,” Tuberville said.

Tuberville said electronic voting machines must be eliminated entirely.

“And we cannot allow these machines to continue on,” he said.

“We have to have paper ballots one day voting, and everybody has to show up with an ID.”

He warned that failure to implement such changes would have serious consequences.

“If we don’t do that, it’s going to be over,” Tuberville said.

“We cannot survive like this.”

Tuberville said election reform legislation has already cleared the House but faces obstacles in the Senate.

“And again, to get this passed, what? What do we need to do?” he said.

“It’s passed in the House. We’re going to have to bust a filibuster. We’re going to have to bust a filibuster.”

He expressed doubt that enough senators would support the effort, even if procedural hurdles are overcome.

“And then we’re going to have to get some of these rhinos to vote with us,” Tuberville said.

“RINOs to vote with us. I don’t know whether we get 51 even if we bust a filibuster.”

Tuberville said opposition within the Senate is driven in part by hostility toward President Trump.

“And and actually do something for the country that it, just, it, it,” he said.

“You know, I hate to say that, but I’ve seen things work up here for six years, and we’ve got a lot of people that that just do not believe in President Trump.”

“They don’t like him and they want him gone, and they feel like this is a way they can get rid of him,” Tuberville said.
