NBC News moderator Kristen Welker engaged in a heated exchange with House Speaker Mike Johnson on Sunday over election integrity, President Trump’s continued criticism of the 2020 election, and the FBI’s ongoing investigation into alleged voter fraud in Fulton County, Georgia.

The confrontation unfolded during a broadcast of Meet the Press, where Welker questioned Johnson about President Trump’s recent public statements and the administration’s handling of election-related investigations.

The discussion followed remarks Trump made during a Jan. 21 address to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, where he told attendees that the 2020 presidential election “was a rigged election.”

Trump added, “Everybody now knows that. They found out. People will soon be prosecuted for what they did.”

The exchange also came amid renewed scrutiny after the FBI executed a search warrant at an election hub in Fulton County as part of an investigation tied to the 2020 election.

Federal agents seized ballots and election records, an action that has drawn sharp reaction from Democratic lawmakers and media figures.

As first reported by The Gateway Pundit, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard was present during the execution of the warrants, prompting backlash from Democrats.

President Trump later defended Gabbard’s role, telling reporters, “She’s working very hard on trying to keep the elections safe, and she’s done a very good job,” and adding that “you’re going to see some interesting things happening.”

Several Democratic lawmakers described Gabbard’s presence as “deeply concerning” in a letter sent to her office.

Welker sharply criticized the President’s focus on the 2020 election, dismissing claims of irregularities and asserting that the issue had already been settled.

“Is it healthy for this country’s democracy for the sitting President to be questioning the 2020 election, five years ago, something— claims that have been deemed to be false, again, now that he lost?” Welker asked Johnson.

Johnson responded by emphasizing the importance of election integrity as a foundational issue.

“What’s healthy for our country and our democracy is for everyone to be laser focused on election integrity,” he said.

Welker immediately pushed back.

“That’s not election integrity, Mr. Speaker! This was asked and answered and litigated and relitigated. The page has been turned. He’s still talking about an election that he lost, allegations which have been deemed claimed false,” she said.

Johnson said the President’s focus is forward-looking rather than an attempt to relitigate past outcomes.

“The President is keeping the focus on election integrity. It must be in the forefront of everyone’s minds, because if you don’t have a free and fair election, you cannot maintain a Constitutional Republic,” Johnson said. “

He’s bothered by what happened in 2020, and we all know there was a lot of irregularity and problem in that, and we’re not going to relitigate it. That’s not the point. What we have to do is go forward and ensure that we don’t have these problems in the future.”

Johnson pointed to legislative action taken by House Republicans, including passage of the SAVE Act.

“That’s why the House has passed the SAVE Act twice already. We have further election integrity measures that we’re working on now, and everybody in both parties should applaud that. They should support it,” he said.

Welker then shifted the discussion to Georgia, referencing statements by Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff, who claimed the Fulton County investigation was politically motivated.

Ossoff described the probe as “a shot across the bow at the midterm elections,” adding, “He tried to steal power when he lost it in 2020. We have to be prepared for all kinds of schemes and shenanigans. We have to be prepared for him to try to deprive people of their voting rights in Georgia.”

Welker asked Johnson to respond, but repeatedly interrupted him. When Johnson attempted to explain his concerns about Georgia’s election procedures, Welker interjected, “There were two statewide recounts in Georgia!”

Johnson maintained that controversies surrounding Georgia’s election processes persist.

“They sent mail-out ballots to everyone. Everyone knows all of the problems that occurred in Georgia. It was very controversial, and remains so to this day, because of all the things that happened there,” he said.

“Again, we’re not going to relitigate that, but what we have to focus on is going forward to ensure that there are not questions about the elections.”

He added that the Fulton County investigation is intended to restore confidence.

“This investigation is to ensure that all the questions about the elections in Fulton County are investigated properly, so that people have confidence in the system again. That’s very important,” Johnson said.

Welker disputed that unresolved questions remain, calling Johnson’s position subjective.

“But there are really no questions about election integrity from 2020 that have not been asked and answered,” she said, before adding, “Nope, nope!”

The exchange escalated further when Welker accused Gabbard of participating in domestic law enforcement activities.

“Was it appropriate for the Director of National Intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard— she was on the ground there— she is prohibited by law from taking part in domestic law enforcement,” Welker said.

Johnson said he lacked sufficient information to make a judgment.

“I don’t know. I do believe the DNI has some involvement in some, some, some role to play in ensuring election integrity, but I don’t know the details of that, and we have to reserve judgment,” he said.

Welker cited statutory restrictions on intelligence agencies, but Johnson reiterated that the facts remain unclear.

“But we don’t know that that’s what happened there. I don’t know that she was part of a law enforcement function there,” he said.
