Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent clashed on Wednesday with Rep. Stephen Lynch (D-Mass.) during a contentious House Financial Services Committee hearing, delivering a pointed remark after the Massachusetts Democrat repeatedly interrupted him while questioning federal cryptocurrency policy, as reported by The Gateway Pundit.

Bessent appeared before the committee to present the annual report from the Financial Stability Oversight Council, which is tasked with identifying and responding to economic and financial risks across the U.S. economy.

The hearing quickly became heated as Lynch pressed Bessent on cryptocurrency enforcement and actions taken since President Donald Trump took office.

Lynch grew visibly frustrated as Bessent declined to answer what the secretary viewed as a leading question tied to the Trump administration and digital asset regulation.

According to accounts from the hearing, Lynch raised his voice and repeatedly interrupted Bessent while attempting to regain control of his allotted questioning time.

Chairman French Hill (R-Ark.) attempted to interject and restore order as the exchange escalated, but Lynch continued speaking over both Hill and Bessent.

During the back-and-forth, Bessent referenced policies under the Biden administration, prompting Lynch to object and accuse the secretary of avoiding the question. The exchange included the following remarks:

LYNCH: “Financial services firms…”

BESSENT: “Well, the Biden Administration…”

LYNCH: “Sir, please be responsive to my question.”

BESSENT: “I’m trying, sir, and this back-and-forth is just eating your time. The Biden Administration had an extinction policy for crypto…”

LYNCH: “This is when Trump came into office. I’m going to go to the next question… Mr. Chairman, the answers have to be responsive if we are going to have a serious hearing.”

BESSENT: “Well, the questions have to be serious.”

LYNCH: “Those are 100 dismissals of cases the Trump Administration executed in their first weeks in office.”

BESSENT: “Well, the questions have to be serious.”

Lynch continued pressing his argument, claiming that the dismissal of cryptocurrency-related cases under the Trump administration raised concerns for the financial services industry.

LYNCH: “This is a serious question and a serious issue for the financial services industry… All of a sudden, these crypto cases went away. This should be a serious question for you. TRUST should be a serious question for the financial services industry! (To Bessent) No, this is my time! I haven’t asked you any more questions!”

Chairman Hill again attempted to step in.

Hill: “The gentleman from Massachusetts…”

LYNCH: “I’m trying to get to my next question!”

As Lynch continued speaking, Bessent responded with a brief remark that drew an audible reaction in the hearing room.

BESSENT: “Could you speak a little louder? I can’t hear you.”

Lynch reacted dismissively.

LYNCH: “Yeah, okay. I might!”

The exchange marked one of several tense moments during the hearing as Democrats questioned the Treasury secretary about regulatory priorities under the Trump administration, particularly regarding digital assets and financial oversight.

Bessent maintained that his responses were appropriate to the questions asked and reiterated his view that regulatory approaches under the prior administration differed sharply from current policy.

The hearing proceeded after the exchange, with Chairman Hill reminding members to allow witnesses to answer without interruption.
