Democrats have a natural advantage going into the midterms. Their voters are in a frenzy, and the midterms have historically favored the out-of-power party.

Presidential years tend to be high-turnout elections, and off-years not so much. And since elections are won by margins, every bit of voter motivation matters. Getting a larger share of your voters to the polls can make all the difference, even in situations where the majority of people disagree with you. You need the majority of people who VOTE to win, not the majority of people who have an opinion.

With all that said, the Democrats face one very big problem: after Harris’s disastrous 2024 performance, which burned through so much cash to no effect, donors are not excited to give Democrats money. And, more importantly, DOGE and the fraud investigations have put a huge dent in the supply of reliable Democratic cash: government spending that goes into a black hole and then comes back to fill the party’s and its candidates’ coffers.

Odd how the money gets tight when the taxpayer to NGO to smaller NGO to another NGO to Dem Campaign Donation pipeline gets shut down🤔

Democratic voters may be foaming at the mouth, but it turns out that the mouth foamers have never been the big source of cash that the Democrats always claimed. ActBlue has been a money laundering machine, and USAID and other government programs have been handing over billions of dollars to NGOs that do the Democrats’ dirty work, and that firehose of cash has been cut to a trickle.

The pending Supreme Court decision is widely expected to water down Democrats’ yearslong advantage in grass-roots donations.

So RNC has stockpiled cash — and is preparing to buy TV ads at cheaper rates to offset Dem candidate COH edges.https://t.co/26lopuJHaB

The result? Democrats are having a hell of a time raising money from real people. They probably always had trouble doing so. Billionaires might like to hand over big chunks of change, but they were stung in 2024 and are likely a bit worried about pissing off Trump after major efforts to mend fences. Democrats have to rely more on ordinary people, and that is hard. It’s almost like they don’t have much experience relying on anything other than laundered and smurfed money.

The cash flow numbers look grim for Democrats. It’s shocking, I know, to learn that when you turn off the spigots of money from the government, the biggest victim is the Democratic Party. No doubt you thought that money was going to people in need, right?

I sure did. It shocks me like you couldn’t believe that cutting off the flow of cash to NGOs and fraudsters is hurting the Democrats in the wallet.

All told, new federal records show that the three leading arms of the national Republican Party and the two super PACs aligned with House and Senate Republicans entered this year with more than double the cash of the equivalent Democratic groups. The Republican groups had a combined $320 million, compared with roughly $137.2 million for the Democrats after accounting for debts.

“Any Democrat who isn’t concerned isn’t serious,” said Bradley Beychok, a co-founder of American Bridge, a Democratic donor network and super PAC. His group held a closed-door conference with more than 100 contributors in Florida late last month, and the financial disparity was a hot topic. “Yes, Democrats have momentum on our side and a wide opportunity map, but we have a glaring disadvantage in overall money.”

While individual Democratic candidates in some top races are far outpacing Republicans in fund-raising, the main party operations tell a different story. Add in Mr. Trump’s super PAC money — plus roughly $70 million he has scattered across other federal accounts — and Republicans began the year with an unheard-of edge of more than $550 million.

Interviews with more than two dozen strategists and officials in both parties reveal that money — which has been a strength for Democrats throughout most of the Trump era — could suddenly be a liability for the party.

That would be a sharp reversal from 2024, when Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign and the D.N.C. raised $2 billion while Mr. Trump and the R.N.C. brought in $1.2 billion. But some Democratic donors were dispirited after spending so much en route to defeat.

As I have pointed out quite a few times, it is no coincidence that Kamala Harris picked corrupt Tim Walz to be her running mate. By the time she did, his connection to the massive fraud in Minnesota was well-documented, if not covered with zeal by the media. Convictions had been steadily coming in, the US Attorney had made clear that the system was designed to create fraud, and the connections to Walz and Attorney General Keith Ellison were well documented.

He was chosen BECAUSE he was an accomplished fraudster, not despite that.

WOW: Democrats enter the 2026 midterms buried in debt—DNC starts the year with just $14M cash on hand but $17.5M in debt (net negative ~$3.5M), while the RNC boasts $95M cash on hand and zero debt, giving Republicans a massive ~$100M financial advantage. pic.twitter.com/oeXIcrWvcY

Now that the money spigots are being turned off one by one, starting with USAID but going far beyond that, the Democrats can’t seem to tap into that sweet flow of cash anymore.

And no, the cash disparity can’t be attributed to Republicans being in power again—the Democrats had a huge cash advantage in Trump’s first term. Trump and the Republicans may be doing well in raising money, but the Democrats’ money supply really has crashed.

I can’t predict what the cash advantage will mean come November. The evidence seems to be that spending makes a marginal difference, but far less than you would expect given how often you see ads on TV. Probably the best money spent is on “Get Out the Vote” (GOTV) efforts, which Democrats are quite good at.

Or at least they were, using all those phony NGOs. We’ll see this year.
