Authorities in British Columbia have identified the suspect in a mass shooting that left eight people dead, including his mother and stepbrother, in what is now one of the deadliest incidents in Canadian history, as reported by The New York Post.
Jesse Van Rootselaar, 18, carried out the attack Tuesday in the remote community of Tumbler Ridge before turning the gun on himself, according to law enforcement officials.
The violence began at a private residence and later continued at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, where six victims were found dead inside the building.
The shooter was reportedly a mentally ill male who identified as trans and pretended to be a girl
Police didn’t want to offend him by “misgendering” him so they called him a “gunperson”

Van Rootselaar’s mother, identified by CTV News as 39-year-old Jennifer Strang, and his 11-year-old stepbrother were discovered deceased at the residence.

Roughly 25 other individuals were wounded during the attack. Students and teachers remained barricaded inside classrooms for more than two hours before police escorted them to safety.
Resurfaced photos posted by family members have drawn attention in the aftermath of the shooting. In one Facebook post from August 2021, Van Rootselaar’s grandmother shared birthday images of him at age 14.
The post read, “Happy 14th birthday to our grandson Jesse !! Love you always !! XOXO,” and included multiple photos of the teen. Another image circulating online shows Van Rootselaar seated on a couch, smiling and holding a rifle while a younger child sits nearby.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police confirmed details about the suspect during a press briefing.
Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald stated that Van Rootselaar was “born a biological male … who approximately six years ago began to transition to female, and identified as female.”
Canadian Police are worried about respecting the transgender shooter’s pronouns: “We identified the suspect as they chose to be identified in public… I can a say that Jesse was born as a biological male who… identified as female.”

An initial emergency alert issued Tuesday afternoon described the suspect as a “female in a dress.” Authorities later clarified the suspect’s identity and background.
According to McDonald, Van Rootselaar had prior interactions with law enforcement. Police had visited the family home multiple times over the years due to concerns related to his mental health.
Firearms were previously seized from the residence; however, the lawful owner — whom officials did not name — successfully petitioned to have them returned.
Investigators recovered a long gun and a modified handgun at the school following the shooting. It remains unclear whether those weapons were among the firearms that had previously been confiscated and later returned.
The scale of the attack has drawn national attention. The shooting is being compared to other deadly incidents in Canada’s history, including the 1989 massacre at École Polytechnique in Montreal, where a gunman killed 14 students.
In response to prior mass shootings, Canada has implemented strict gun control measures. Those policies include a broadened ban on firearms classified as assault weapons.
Tumbler Ridge, a small and remote community in northeastern British Columbia, has been left reeling in the aftermath.
Authorities continue to investigate the timeline of events, the source of the weapons used, and whether additional warning signs were missed.
Police have not released further details about a potential motive. The investigation remains ongoing.
