Fox News legal analyst Gregg Jarrett criticized Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz on Friday after the governor called for federal taxpayer dollars to cover damage linked to anti-Immigration and Customs Enforcement riots in the Twin Cities.

Walz made the comments after the Trump administration announced plans to scale back its immigration enforcement presence in the Minneapolis area.

The enforcement surge had followed weeks of mass detentions and protests.

During an appearance on The Evening Edit, Jarrett rejected Walz’s demand that the federal government reimburse Minnesota for damage stemming from the unrest.

“First of all, they’ll never get it, and second of all, it’s utterly ludicrous. Tim Walz has taken buffoonery to a whole new level, famously calling himself, of course, a knucklehead during the vice-presidential debate,” Jarrett said.

“Look, it was his citizens that engaged in the rioting, in the acts of violence, and the destruction, and upon orders from the Minneapolis mayor and encouragement from Tim Walz.”

Jarrett said responsibility for the property damage and violence rests with local leadership and those who participated in the riots. He argued that city and state officials failed to maintain order as unrest unfolded in Minneapolis.

“Law enforcement was essentially told to stand down. If their people had actually done their jobs, it wouldn’t have happened or unfolded in the way that it did. But for the federal government to reimburse them for their own damage, it’s absurd,” Jarrett said.

The unrest followed federal immigration enforcement operations in Minnesota.

Border Czar Tom Homan announced that the immigration enforcement surge in Minneapolis would conclude after weeks of activity that included mass detentions and public demonstrations.

“As a result of our efforts here, Minnesota is now less of a sanctuary state for criminals,” Homan said at a news conference.

“I have proposed and President Trump has concurred that this surge operation conclude.”

After Homan’s announcement, Walz said Washington should pay for damages and costs tied to the unrest surrounding the immigration enforcement efforts.

“The federal government needs to pay for what they broke here,” Walz said.

“There [is] going to be accountability on the things that happened, but one of the things is the incredible and immense costs that were borne by the people of this state. The federal government needs to be responsible. You don’t get to break things and then just leave without doing something about it.”

Walz’s comments came as Minnesota officials assessed the financial impact of the protests and riots linked to the ICE operations.

The governor said the federal government should not withdraw from the area without addressing the expenses incurred by the state.

Jarrett’s remarks focused on how local authorities responded to the violence and destruction.

He said rioters were residents of Minnesota and that state and city officials bore responsibility for how events unfolded.

The Trump administration’s decision to scale back the enforcement surge followed weeks of operations in the Minneapolis area.

Homan said the effort had achieved its objectives, stating that Minnesota was “now less of a sanctuary state for criminals.”

The debate over who should bear the costs of the unrest emerged as federal authorities ended the surge.

Walz maintained that the federal government should cover damages connected to the enforcement operations and related protests, while Jarrett argued that reimbursement from Washington would be inappropriate given the role of local officials and residents in the events that led to property damage and violence.
