New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is urging residents to sign up as emergency snow shovelers ahead of a major winter storm forecast to slam the East Coast, but applicants must provide multiple forms of identification to qualify for the work.
The New York City Sanitation Department website states that individuals seeking to register as emergency snow shovelers must submit two small photos sized 1-1.5 square inches, two original forms of identification along with copies, and their Social Security card.
Mamdani called on New Yorkers Saturday to report to their local sanitation garages to enroll, telling prospective workers to arrive with the necessary documentation.

“For those who want to do more to help your neighbors and earn some extra cash, you too can become an emergency snow shoveler. Just show up at your local sanitation garage… with your paperwork which is accessible online,” Hizzoner said at a presser Saturday.
According to the sanitation department’s website, emergency shovelers earn $19.14 per hour. After 40 hours worked in a week, the hourly rate increases to $28.71.
Mamdani is a member of the New York chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America, which has publicly opposed voter identification requirements at the federal level. The organization has criticized The SAVE Act, a voter ID proposal, and described it as discriminatory.
“Our candidates for office stand firm against racist voter ID laws and secret poll taxes like the ‘SAVE America Act,’” the DSA’s website stated.

The identification requirements for snow shovelers prompted commentary on social media, with users drawing comparisons between the documentation needed for the temporary city job and broader debates over voter ID laws.

The push to recruit emergency shovelers comes as a significant winter storm is expected to impact New York City and much of the East Coast beginning Sunday and continuing into Monday.
Forecasters say the city could receive as much as 24 inches of snow during the blizzard. Wind gusts are projected to reach up to 60 miles per hour, and snowfall rates of one to three inches per hour are expected at the height of the storm.
City sanitation crews are preparing for the heavy snowfall, and the emergency shoveler program is intended to supplement municipal operations by clearing snow from bus stops, crosswalks, and other public areas.
Residents who meet the documentation requirements can register through their local sanitation garage, as directed by the mayor’s office.
