Former President Bill Clinton put on a masterclass in bad public relations while being deposed in late February before the House Oversight Committee, smiling when presented with evidence of his relationship to Jeffrey Epstein.

The deposition was part of the panel’s investigation into Epstein. Footage released Monday shows Clinton being grilled on his connection to the convicted sex offender.

“I’m not happy, but I’m comfortable. And my conscience is clear. That helps,” said Clinton, smiling and crossing his arms.

Clinton then peered over several pages of exhibits provided by the House Oversight Committee. Those exhibits included a photograph from inside Epstein’s Manhattan property, in which Epstein had displayed a framed photograph of himself and Clinton. Former President Bill Clinton was seen flipping through old Epstein photos, smiling and nodding at his deposition, until his attorney stepped in and pulled them away.

Clinton examined the pages before him, mouthing indiscernible words, before his attorney snatched the papers away. Thus began a tug-of-war between the former president and his attorney. Clinton emerged victorious, again reviewing the pages, before laughing and smiling.

Allow me to offer some image management advice, in the unlikely case you find yourself deposed on your association with a convicted sex offender. The following applies even, or perhaps especially, if you’ve done nothing wrong. (RELATED: Bill Clinton Dusts Off Childhood Anecdote To Deny Epstein Involvement)

  1. If you happen to think of some funny, unrelated anecdote, do not laugh.
  2. If you find some element of your relationship with that convicted sex offender funny, do not laugh.
  3. If your attorney forcibly removes papers from your hands, it may be a good sign to move on.
  4. Don’t laugh.
