Dr. Mehmet Oz is pushing back against New York Attorney General Letitia James after she threatened legal action against NYU Langone Medical Center over its decision to discontinue a transgender youth treatment program, as reported by The New York Post.

The dispute centers on NYU Langone’s announcement in February that it would permanently end its Transgender Youth Health Program, which provided medical interventions related to gender transition for minors.

The hospital’s move followed warnings from the Trump administration that federal funding could be withdrawn if the medical center continued providing gender-affirming care to children.

James responded by sending a letter to the hospital system on Feb. 25, warning that canceling the program could violate state anti-discrimination laws and harm vulnerable patients.

“NYU Langone appears to be suddenly and indefinitely cancelling transgender children’s future appointments thereby jeopardizing access to medically necessary healthcare for some of the most vulnerable New Yorkers,” James wrote.

The attorney general’s office gave the hospital until March 11 to resume the program and restore the services.

Dr. Oz responded to James with a letter dated March 10, strongly defending the hospital’s decision and criticizing the effort to pressure medical providers to continue the treatments.

“Our children are not guinea pigs,” Oz wrote in the letter, which was obtained by The Post.

Oz argued that the medical debate surrounding transgender procedures for minors remains unresolved and warned against government officials attempting to impose mandates on physicians.

“Given that emerging medical evidence continues to demonstrate the harm these procedures inflict on children, it is both irresponsible and false to declare the other side of this ongoing scientific debate definitively ‘medically necessary,’” Oz wrote.

He added that forcing doctors to perform procedures that remain the subject of ongoing dispute raises serious ethical concerns.

“It is worse still to compel doctors to perform procedures that remain the subject of substantial dispute. It is also unethical. Your claim that discontinuing these interventions constitutes unlawful discrimination is irresponsible.”

Oz also stated that his office supports NYU Langone’s decision to end the program.

“My office stands behind NYU’s decision,” he wrote.

In his letter, Oz described the hospital’s move as a step toward reevaluating controversial medical interventions for minors.

Oz said NYU Langone Health’s decision to discontinue what he called “sex-rejecting procedures” for children represents a significant policy shift.

He wrote that the decision was “a serious and necessary course correction” aimed at stopping “surgical and chemical interventions on vulnerable children with potentially irreversible consequences.”

Oz also pointed to international policy changes as part of the broader discussion over treatments involving minors.

In the letter, he referenced a report ordered by the Trump administration and said the findings align with decisions by several European governments that have placed restrictions on similar treatments.

Oz specifically mentioned actions taken in the United Kingdom, where authorities imposed limits on prescribing puberty blockers to minors.

According to Oz, those decisions were made after formal evidence reviews and evolving analysis of available clinical data.

“Those governments framed their decisions as grounded in formal evidence reviews and evolving assessments of the clinical data—not politics and baseless pressure campaigns,” Oz wrote.

The dispute between James and NYU Langone comes amid a broader national debate over the use of medical interventions for minors experiencing gender dysphoria.

The New York Post reported that it reached out to the attorney general’s office seeking additional comment regarding Oz’s letter and the ongoing dispute.

As of now, the disagreement between the attorney general’s office and NYU Langone remains unresolved.
