War Secretary Pete Hegseth announced the creation of a task force to review senior U.S. military education institutions, saying the Department of War must ensure that professional military education focuses on developing effective leaders and warfighters rather than adopting ideological coursework similar to that found in some civilian universities.

Hegseth criticized several types of academic programs currently appearing in civilian higher education, arguing that such material promotes political agendas that have no place in the education of military leaders.

“Seminars on genocide through the analytic of gender. Hmm, sounds interesting. So called whiteness studies, courses that celebrate the history of Hamas, where a professor calls Islamist militants and their attacks astounding and incredible. Graduate studies that focus on the abolition of law enforcement, classes on leadership that are just recycled garbage from the old DEI, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion playbook,” Hegseth said.

“These are examples of classes that our leaders in our civilian colleges and universities too often celebrate,” he continued.

Hegseth said such academic programs contribute to what he described as a broader ideological trend that he believes undermines national cohesion and readiness.

“The truth is, they help cultivate a radical hate America agenda, and we can’t afford that same toxic ideology in America’s War Department,” Hegseth said.

“It degrades our readiness, it’s a risk to our forces, and it undermines our mission of peace through strength,” he added.

The War Secretary said the Department of War has a responsibility to ensure that its professional military education programs remain focused on developing strong leadership and operational capability.

“At the Department of War, we have a duty to ensure that our professional military education develops real leaders, war fighters who dominate into the future,” Hegseth said.

He said the department intends to maintain rigorous standards for the institutions responsible for educating senior officers.

“We’re committed to making our own Senior Service colleges maintain the highest of standards that those places align with President Trump’s commitment to the American people, that our military will remain the strongest in history,” Hegseth said.

To accomplish that goal, Hegseth said he has directed the Under Secretary of War for Personnel and Readiness to establish a review panel immediately.

“That’s why I’m directing the Under Secretary of War for personnel and readiness to establish a task force effective immediately,” he said.

According to Hegseth, the task force will evaluate several major military education institutions where senior officers receive advanced instruction.

“The mission of that task force is to evaluate our senior service colleges, where we educate our own think, places like the Army War College or National Defense University, the Naval War College, Marine Corps university or the Air War College, where our senior officers go to continue their education,” he said.

Hegseth said the review will focus on faculty, administrators, and academic content.

“We’re going to ensure that the professors, administrators and curriculum of those institutions are focused on national security strategy, history and overall excellence confirm that high standards and meritocracy are forefront and make sure that what we’ve seen in our civilian institutions never surface in our military education institutions,” Hegseth said.

He also indicated that concerns have already been raised about some course offerings within certain military colleges.

“Trust me, I’ve heard the stories. I know some of our own Senior Service colleges. Some of those that I just listed have similar courses and similar ideologies,” Hegseth said.

“We need to rip them out, and we’re going to,” he added.

The task force will conduct a review over a three-month period.

“This task force will have 90 days to assess whether our senior service colleges, the list I just provided, are actually effective,” Hegseth said.

The review will also identify any areas where changes may be required.

“They’re going to identify any deficiencies and make sure they’re focused on core national security issues,” he said.

Hegseth said the department’s goal is to ensure that senior officers are trained in strategic thinking and grounded in the principles that shaped the United States.

“We want military leaders who are critical thinkers that have studied the principles on which our founding fathers established this republic, and that are educated and prepared to win wars after the wokeness and weakness of Joe Biden’s administration,” Hegseth said.

He also emphasized the importance of maintaining the warrior ethos within military education programs.

“Our war fighters deserve training with integrity where the focus is on the warrior ethos, on deterrence and on strength,” he said.

Hegseth said that preparing officers for leadership roles remains a central responsibility of the Department of War.

“As the Secretary of War, it’s my job to make sure those who are rising to the highest of ranks are as prepared as humanly possible,” he said.

He also noted that the department has already begun shifting away from civilian universities for certain officer education programs due to concerns about ideological bias.

“And if we’re pulling officers out of civilian universities because they’re too woke, then we better make sure our own universities are prepared to do the task properly,” Hegseth said.

Hegseth concluded by saying he expects the task force to deliver findings after completing its review.

“We’re going to do that. I look forward to this task force report,” he said.
