Air guns, particularly airsoft guns, are modeled to look much like real firearms. That’s because the ones that don’t look like real guns don’t sell all that well. Competition air guns are one thing, but most air gun buyers want that realistic look because, well, guns are cool. I hate to break it to folks, but guns are legitimately cool, and there’s a reason people like them.
But over the last handful of days in my neck of the woods, we ended up with a couple of stories that highlight just how idiotic some criminals are, even in a pro-gun state, when trying to use air guns to engage in criminal activities.
First, this is from the Lee County (Georgia) Sheriff’s Office.
Post continues:
Deputies responded quickly and located the individual on Glendale Rd matching the description. When deputies gave verbal commands for the male to stop, he decided to run — which turned a bad decision into several worse ones. The suspect fled on foot toward the Publix area, then back toward Glendale Rd before crossing onto Creek Dr and Cherokee Dr. Deputies pursued the male into a wooded area and, through persistence and determination, successfully took him into custody without further incident.During the pursuit, the suspect attempted to discard evidence. After canvassing the area between residences on Creek Dr, deputies located a Glock 19 Model CO₂ BB pistol and a conducted energy device (taser) that had been thrown by the suspect while fleeing. At the time of arrest, he was also in possession of a black ski mask and a weapon light compatible with Glock-style handguns. The suspect was identified as Malik Yoba Lawrence, who was transported to the Lee County Jail and charged with the following offenses:
• Loitering and Prowling (OCGA 16-11-36)
• Obstruction of Law Enforcement Officers (OCGA 16-10-24)
• Wearing Mask, Hood, or Device to Conceal Identity (OCGA 16-11-38)
• Simple Assault (OCGA 16-5-20)
• Tampering with Evidence (OCGA 16-10-94)Our deputies’ determination ensured this situation was brought to a safe conclusion for the community.Pro-tip: dressing up like you’re about to commit an armed robbery and roaming around our county is a terrible idea.As always, we encourage anyone engaged in criminal activity to get out and stay out of Lee County.
I used to live in that neck of Lee County. It’s not exactly the ‘hood, by any stretch. If people see someone walking around in a ski mask, especially on a day when the high was around 81 degrees, they’re going to call the cops. The fact that he ran is just idiotic, though. For one thing, he wasn’t going to get far. For another, walking around with an air gun isn’t illegal. If he hadn’t had the mask on, no one would have even called the cops.
But as stupid as he was, we’ve got an even better candidate for moron of the week.
A Dougherty County man is facing multiple charges after an aggravated assault against a police officer, Albany Police Department (APD) officials said Monday, March 9.
Officers were reportedly called to the 800 block of West Oglethorpe on Saturday, March 7. O’Hara Thomas Jr., 46, was driving an electric scooter on the wrong side of the road when officers arrived, according to APD.
Thomas ran to a local business and pulled out a weapon, police said. He reportedly dropped the weapon when an officer ordered him to the ground. The weapon was later determined to be an air gun.
What in the hell did he pull the air gun out for? Was he going to intimidate the police officer, who was likely wearing body armor and had a real firearm?
Old boy is lucky he didn’t get his butt shot, because he was practically begging for it.
This is important, though, because while anti-gunners will often pretend that this isn’t a thing that impacts gun owners, it is. These jackwagons will try to point these air guns at lawful citizens, and if they’re carrying these in Georgia–a constitutional carry state–there’s a good chance they’ll get lit up by some armed citizen.
Anti-gunners will then twist the death to suggest the person was “unarmed” or, at the least, count it as a “gun death” and then use it to justify gun control measures.
However, these two people were (allegedly) both carrying something that looked to all the world like a gun and were clearly not going around doing charity work. Hell, both of these guys weren’t even breaking the law by carrying that air gun, but they acted like it because, in their minds, they were armed and were going to act accordingly.
Look, someone reading this might well end up on the other side from someone carrying one of these, and they’ll do what we all figure we’d do in that situation. Then, upon finding out that it wasn’t a real gun, feel terrible for what happened. To them, I say: Don’t. They made the choice. In their minds, they had a gun and expected you to act like your life was in danger. The fact that they didn’t figure that meant you defending your life is on them and them alone.
There is also a myth among some criminals that if you’re not really carrying a gun, judges will go easier on you if you get caught. If that’s true, that needs to change, for the bad guys’ health, if for nothing else.
Meanwhile, there are a couple of other ways we can look at these two chuckleheads.
One is that, while anti-gun states claim that guns are too easy to get in a state like Georgia, these two jackwagons were using air guns, probably because they couldn’t get a real one anyway.
The other is that no matter what gun control laws get passed, there will be people who try to use the threat of deadly force to steal from others. We law-abiding people have a God-given right to protect ourselves from these acts of aggression, and for so long as one gun is in criminal hands, there’s always a legitimate threat to our lives. Even if you think gun control works, it won’t be enough, and we have a right to have our guns to protect ourselves.
Since gun control can’t protect us, then it needs to stop inhibiting us.
Editor’s Note: The radical left will stop at nothing to enact their radical gun control agenda and strip us of our Second Amendment rights.
