Body camera footage from an Oklahoma City police pursuit captured an unusual moment when an officer briefly rode on the hood of a passing vehicle while chasing a minibike rider who fled through city streets and residential areas.

The incident took place on March 6 and began when an Oklahoma City police officer spotted two minibikes traveling without headlights.

According to a police report, the lack of headlights made the bikes difficult for other drivers to see. The riders also failed to stop at a stop sign near Southwest 41st Street and South Santa Fe Avenue.

The officer began pursuing the minibikes in his patrol vehicle.

During the pursuit, the two riders split up.

The officer continued following one of the minibikes as it traveled down Southeast 44th Street.

Police said the rider ignored multiple traffic controls while attempting to escape.

According to the report, the driver continued fleeing through several streets and ran numerous stop signs and traffic lights while the officer followed.

The pursuit eventually led to a dead-end road near Southeast 41st Street.

At that point, the minibike rider left the roadway and traveled through a residential yard and across a small field north of the street.

The officer stopped his patrol vehicle and continued the pursuit on foot.

The minibike rider later returned to the roadway near Southeast 40th Street.

When the officer reached the intersection of Southeast 40th Street and Santa Fe Avenue, a passing vehicle approached with its window open.

The officer called out to the driver and asked for assistance while continuing the chase.

“Go! Go! Go! Go! Go!” the officer said as he jumped onto the hood of the vehicle.

According to the police report, the officer made contact with the driver and quickly determined the driver was willing to assist law enforcement in continuing the pursuit.

“Drive! Drive! Drive! Drive!” the officer told the driver.

The driver proceeded forward while the officer remained on the hood of the vehicle.

The officer directed the driver during the chase while holding onto the front of the car for approximately two minutes as they followed the minibike rider through the area.

The pursuit ended when the minibike rider stopped near Southwest 49th Street and South Sage Avenue.

At that point, the officer jumped off the hood of the car and moved to detain the rider.

During the arrest, the rider told the officer he had not seen him during the pursuit.

“I didn’t see you!” the minibike driver said.

The officer responded immediately.

“Yes, you did!”

Police took the rider into custody at the scene.

The driver of the vehicle who had assisted the officer remained at the location after the arrest was completed. After the situation concluded, the driver commented on the intensity of the pursuit.

“So, that’s the kind of adrenaline y’all get to deal with?” the driver said.

According to police, the minibike rider was arrested on multiple charges stemming from the pursuit.

Those charges include eluding a police officer, failure to maintain liability insurance, driving without a license, failure to use a safety signal, failure to stop at a stop sign and operating a minibike on a street.

Authorities said the incident was documented through body camera footage, which captured both the pursuit and the officer’s interaction with the driver who assisted in the chase.

The footage shows the officer transitioning from a patrol vehicle pursuit to a foot chase before ultimately continuing the pursuit with the help of the passing motorist.

Police reports indicate the driver who assisted the officer cooperated voluntarily and remained at the scene after the suspect was taken into custody.

The suspect was detained without further incident once the minibike stopped.
