Joseph Daniel Isaac, better known to his fans as SleazyWorld Go, should probably change his name to SleazyWorld Going to Prison after a jury in Kansas City found him guilty of possessing a firearm as a convicted felon.

Isaac could be sentenced to fifteen years in federal prison for possessing firearms after an armed robbery conviction in Michigan a decade ago. According to prosecutors, Isaac’s interactions with guns were an ongoing problem, with Isaac showing off and handling firearms in dozens of social media posts over a two-year period.

Federal authorities said the case began in June 2022 after an anonymous tip led agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives to examine the rapper’s online presence. Investigators later observed him on October 19, 2022, holding a black pistol near a vehicle at a townhome complex in Kansas City, Kansas.

A search of the vehicle later uncovered four firearms, which ultimately led to a federal indictment in August 2023.

The charges originally included multiple allegations, including felon in possession and machine gun related violations. During trial, the jury returned a conviction only on the felon in possession count tied to a Romarm/Cugir 7.62x39mm pistol. Jurors cleared him of the machine gun charge and several other serious counts.

In that respect Isaac should count himself lucky, because a conviction for possessing a machine gun could have tacked on several more years to his sentence.

Even so, Isaac’s attorneys indicated in a written statement that he plans on appealing his conviction.

“We acknowledge the verdict and the judicial process,” they wrote. “We emphasize our client’s focus on family, business ventures, and community involvement, and we will explore every available legal avenue to challenge this conviction.”

Good luck with that. While some federal courts have cast doubt on the constitutionality of Section 922(g)(1), which prohibits gun possession for those convicted of any crime punishable by more than a year in prison, those cases have all involved individuals convicted of non-violent crimes like passing bad checks and falsifying income on food stamp applications. Armed robbery is a different story, and with Isaac’s post-conviction music career regularly featuring lyrics about shooting rivals and committing a variety of violent offenses along with his social media posts full of firearms he’s not allowed to possess, I don’t think he’s going to get very far trying to make the case that the federal statute violates his Second Amendment rights.

The courts that have ruled 922(g)(1) can be unconstitutional in some circumstances have all made it clear that “dangerous” people can still be disarmed without violating their right to keep and bear arms. Isaacs might try to argue that his lyrics shouldn’t be taken literally, and that his social media posts are just a persona, not an indication of who he really is, but I suspect that his words and actions will be seen as evidence that Isaacs does, in fact, pose a danger to the community at large… or at least those he views as his enemies.

Sentencing will take place in late June, and while I doubt he’ll get the full 15-year sentence he’s eligible for, I don’t think he’s going to walk away with nothing more than probation, as we saw with Declan Lauper this month; the son of pop star Cyndi Lauper and a wannabe rapper of his own who was busted for carrying a gun without a permit in New York City. Isaacs was convicted in federal court, and doesn’t have soft-on-crime D.A. Alvin Bragg in charge of his prosecution. Isaac’s latest conviction may give him more street cred going forward, but it’s also likely to put a crimp in his recording career for the next few years.
