Republican Leadership Pushes Back Against Public Hearings Over Iran War

Republican leaders pushed back on public hearings over the Iran war as Democrats reject classified briefings and demand public accountability.

Democrats have called for public hearings to examine whether President Donald Trump intends to take control of nuclear material, deploy U.S. troops to Iran and outline a strategy to end the war, NBC News reported. The top two Republicans in Congress — House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune — have pushed back on those demands. Calls have come from individuals like Democrat Senators Chris Murphy of Connecticut and Tim Kaine of Virginia, who led an unsuccessful effort to pass war powers resolutions to rein in Trump’s military operations, according to NBC News.

Thune pushed back on calls for immediate public hearings March 12, arguing that Congress will address the issue through existing legislative channels.

“I’ve said this before. I think there … will be hearings in front of all the relevant committees that deal with national security issues,” Thune said, pointing to the upcoming National Defense Authorization Act and appropriations process. “[T]hose are all going to be hearings in which I’m sure all these issues will be litigated.”

When pressed on whether officials should testify publicly right away, Thune emphasized that lawmakers have already been briefed. “They have briefed us, as I told you,” he said.

Ossoff: So the assessment of the intelligence community is that Iran’s nuclear enrichment program was obliterated by last summer’s airstrikes?

Gabbard: Yes.

On criticism that those briefings have not been public, Thune countered that Trump administration officials are already communicating openly. “Publicly? They’re briefing everybody publicly every day,” he said. “I mean, they’re holding news conferences — you guys are covering them — and putting out all the relevant information about the status of the conflict.”

He said officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, have been “answering the questions, the hard questions that are being asked” daily.

When asked why the House hasn’t held public hearings two weeks after the Iran war started, Johnson went further than Thune, warning that public hearings could compromise the operation in Iran and arguing that holding them could harm the U.S. mission.

“[W]e’re in the midst of a couple-of-weeks-long operation that’s sensitive in its mission and scope, and you cannot go outside of the classified briefing to give to the public the information, because it would adversely affect our mission,” the speaker told reporters Tuesday. “They have well explained this to members of Congress in multiple briefings, both before, during and after the operation commenced.”

Saying he had received multiple classified briefings, Johnson argued that had Trump not acted, he was “convinced that we would have mass casualties of Americans” and said he was confident Iran posed an “imminent threat” to the U.S.

Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, Director of the Central Intelligence Agency John Ratcliffe and Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation Kash Patel testified March 18 before the Senate Select Committee and are scheduled to appear before the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence on March 19. The Daily Caller reached out to Johnson and was referred back to his comments from yesterday’s weekly House Leadership press conference. The Caller also reached out to Thune for comment but did not receive a response in time for publication .
