Scott Bessent said recent developments inside Iran indicate growing instability within the country’s leadership, pointing to defections and financial pressure targeting top officials.
Bessent dismissed claims supporting the regime’s stability, stating, “This is nonsense.”
He added, “Maria, for the regime, we’re back back to the stuff of Baghdad Bob here, the regime is in collapse, and the people are starting to turn against them.”

He said early signs of internal breakdown are already emerging, stating, “We’re starting to see defections at Treasury.”
He continued, “We now know where the Iranian leadership bank accounts are the and those are being frozen.”
Bessent added, “We will, we will hold them and see who comes forward in terms of defections.”
According to Bessent, the trend is expanding across the system, stating, “But we’re starting to see defections throughout the regime, and that’s how this ends.”

He also rejected proposals related to alternative arrangements with Iran, stating, “The idea of some tolling arrangement is ridiculous.”
He added, “What President Trump is talking about.”
Bessent pointed to long-standing focus on strategic assets, stating, “And to be clear, he has focused on cargo Island since 1988 before the Shaw fell.”
He continued, “That the US, they should be focused on that.” He added, “He is laser focused on it.”
He referenced recent military action, stating, “As I said, there was a bombing campaign last week.”
He added, “The military assets on car Island were destroyed.”
Bessent also described deteriorating conditions for workers on the island, stating, “And the other thing I can tell you, if you’re an oil worker, you don’t want to work there.”
He added, “So all the oil workers that are being coerced to stay there.”
He concluded by noting potential future developments, stating, “And you know, we will see what happens with whether that eventually becomes a US asset.”
