The New York Giants are in the part of the calendar when everyone is supposed to be talking about rehab timelines, offseason work, and what a young roster can look like when it is healthy again. Instead, running back Cam Skattebo spent Saturday addressing a controversy that had nothing to do with playbooks.

Skattebo, a 2025 draft pick out of Arizona State, issued a public apology after comments from a recent podcast appearance resurfaced and spread quickly across social media. The remarks were made on the “Bring the Juice” podcast with host Frank Dalena. During the conversation, Skattebo dismissed chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) and agreed with a claim that asthma is not real, comments that drew immediate criticism once clips began circulating widely.

In the episode, Dalena asked Skattebo directly if he believed CTE was “a real thing.” Skattebo responded, “No. It’s an excuse.” When the host followed by suggesting asthma is also an excuse, Skattebo agreed, saying, “Yeah. Asthma’s fake.” He then added, “Just literally breathe air.”

Here’s What They’re Not Telling You About Your Retirement

The podcast segment itself was not new, but the reaction was. The episode aired March 12 and went viral Saturday, prompting backlash from fans and medical advocates. Other coverage described the comments as a “tasteless joke” after Skattebo moved quickly to apologize.

Skattebo’s apology, posted publicly on social media, was written in a tone aimed at accountability and clarification.

“I recently did an interview and had a lapse in judgment, which resulted in me making a tasteless joke about CTE and asthma. It was never my intention to downplay the seriousness of head injuries or asthma. I sincerely apologize to anyone that was offended by my remarks, and I assure you that I’ll be more mindful and respectful going forward. MUCH LOVE.”

The controversy also lands at a time when Skattebo is already dealing with a serious injury recovery. In October Skattebo suffered a right ankle dislocation and also sustained an open tibia fracture and a ruptured deltoid ligament during the Giants’ Week 8 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. He underwent surgery in Philadelphia and began rehab shortly afterward.
