President Donald Trump took aim at Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., after a moment on the Senate floor in which Schumer appeared to misspeak during debate over funding issues tied to the Department of Homeland Security.

“Schumer got ‘discombobulated’ in the Senate yesterday, and said, ‘WE MUST FUND ICE,’ prior to correcting himself,” Trump wrote Sunday morning on Truth Social. “Thank you Chuck, I agree!”

The exchange came as Schumer and Senate Democrats continue efforts to block the SAVE America Act, an election integrity measure, while also arguing that Republicans bear responsibility for a government shutdown that has disrupted operations, including long wait times for travelers at airport security checkpoints across the country.

Schumer quickly corrected his statement during his Senate remarks, saying, “We must fund TSA now,” clarifying that his focus was on funding for the Transportation Security Administration.

His comments were tied to a Democratic push to isolate funding for TSA amid the broader lapse in Department of Homeland Security funding.

The shutdown has led to operational challenges, including reported staffing shortages among TSA officers, which have affected passenger screening at major airports during a peak travel period.

With spring break travel underway, airlines have raised concerns as delays increase at security checkpoints.

Republicans have opposed the effort to separate TSA funding from the rest of DHS, arguing that the entire department requires funding amid ongoing national security concerns, including developments related to Iran. GOP lawmakers have maintained that piecemeal funding would leave critical areas of national security underfunded.

Negotiations over DHS funding continued Sunday, with Senate Appropriations Chair Susan Collins, R-Maine, and Homeland Security Subcommittee Chair Katie Britt, R-Ala., meeting with colleagues to discuss possible paths forward.

“There are lots of ideas swirling right now, some of which you know my colleagues are talking about, but obviously what my sense is at least the good news, and all that is people realizing this has to get fixed,” Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., told reporters as he left the Senate floor Sunday morning.

“It has to get solved, but the best way again, to solve it is to get Democrats to support funding the entire Department of Homeland Security, you know, not picking and choosing certain aspects of it,” Thune said. “So we’ll see where the discussions go today.”

The funding dispute follows an agreement reached in February in which Democrats supported funding most government operations while withholding funds from DHS after the fatal shootings of two anti-ICE agitators in Minnesota by immigration authorities.

Earlier in March, the Senate failed to reach the 60-vote threshold needed to advance a Republican proposal to fully fund DHS. Sen. Bernie Moreno, R-Ohio, objected to a Democratic proposal that sought to fund TSA separately from the rest of the department.

Moreno also introduced a proposal for a two-week extension of DHS funding, but that effort was blocked by Democrats.

The lapse in funding began Feb. 13 and has already led to disruptions, particularly in airport operations, as TSA staffing levels have been affected.

Airlines have warned that continued funding delays could worsen conditions during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.

Industry projections indicate that approximately 171 million passengers are expected to travel during the spring period, representing a 4% increase compared to the same timeframe last year.
