Seven Seriously Injured in UK ‘Car Ramming’ Incident – Brit Police ‘Keeping an Open Mind’

At 9:30 this past Saturday night, in the City Centre section of Derbyshire, England, a black Suzuki was driven into the crowd of folks on the sidewalks enjoying the weekend evening.

Initial reports were that twenty people had been injured, with seven of them severely enough that it required hospitalization.

You can hear one horrified voice say, ‘30, 40 miles per hour, you know.’

Derbyshire police reported an arrest relatively swiftly – a man in his early 30’s – and, as usual, no name or further details. They also asked for anyone with information about the vehicle – a black Suzuki Swift – or any pertinent information to contact them.

Cynics were immediately grateful for the demographics the Derbyshire police had provided ‘on the car.’

Police also tried to offer a comforting statement to the general public while leaving all those questions hanging out in the open like that.

I’d say it was ‘alarming’, particularly when it sounded every bit as if it were a deliberate attack vice a medical incident or tragic accident.

…A witness described the scene as “absolute carnage”, saying numerous people were lying in the road and across the pavement, covered in blood.

“It was utterly horrific,” the unnamed witness added.

It is believed the driver travelled west along Friar Gate – away from the city centre, after striking pedestrians outside Bar Eleven.

Police said the area was “busy with revellers” at the time and the car was “visibly damaged” in the collision.

A staff member at The Spice Lounge restaurant, opposite Bar Eleven, said the vehicle swerved into two people on the pavement before appearing to hit another victim.

The two pedestrians “were just walking normally” outside the bar on Friar Gate when the car mounted the pavement and swerved into them from behind, the unnamed worker said.

CCTV footage from his restaurant showed one person being knocked into the road as the other fell onto the pavement.

Don’t worry, police said – we’re on it.

…Derbyshire police said it is believed that after hitting people on Friar Gate, the driver travelled towards Ashbourne Road before eventually going onto St Alkmund’s Way.

In a statement on Sunday, Ch Supt Aldred added: “I know this incident will have sent shock waves through our communities, but I would like to reassure people that we have a dedicated team of detectives working on it.”

A police cordon remained in place until shortly after 3pm, with forensic workers in white hazmat suits gathering evidence from the scene.

Horrible.

By yesterday, a little more information had leaked out. The man who had been arrested still had yet to be named, but was now described as a 36-year-old who had lived in Britain for some years after immigrating from India.

Oh. And the Derbyshire Constabulary Chief Superintendent mentioned that British counter-terrorism officers were now working alongside them on the case, but they didn’t want anyone to take that the wrong way, as it doesn’t really mean anything until, like, it does.

WE’RE KEEPING AN OPEN MIND 

And then they slapped the crap out of the driver with attempted murder and related vehicular assault charges, which kind of indicates to me they have a fair idea already that he knew exactly what he was doing, notwithstanding their statement of open mind or not.

…The driver, a man aged 36, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, causing serious injury through dangerous driving, inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent and dangerous driving.

He was originally from India but had lived in Britain for a number of years, Derbyshire Police said. He remains in custody.

The force said it was leading the investigation “with the support of counter-terrorism policing colleagues”.

It added that it did not currently believe the suspected car ramming was terror-related, but added that authorities were “keeping an open mind about the potential motives”.

As of this morning, two of the folks hit by the car had been released from the hospital, which is good news. No word on the other victims of the rampage, but the local Derbyshire Live said no deaths had been reported. What a miracle.

The street and area that had been cordoned off have now been reopened, too.

Starmer’s Home Office issued a typical vanilla statement, with thoughts but no prayers and no comment.

A Home Office Spokesperson said: “Our thoughts are with everyone affected by the incident in Derby yesterday evening.

“We are grateful to the police and emergency services for their swift response.

“A man has been arrested and there is no ongoing risk to the public.

“The police are leading the investigation and ministers are being kept updated as it progresses.”

The spokesperson confirmed that the Home Office will not be commenting further due to a live police investigation.

Now the discussion of bollards is being broached, as yet another attack on innocent pedestrians threatens to change the cityscape and way of life for everyone.

Road barriers should be placed around “vulnerable” Derby city centre areas – a councillor has claimed in the wake of the Friar Gate incident, which left multiple people seriously injured.

…In the wake of the incident, a call has been made for a city centre “review” to determine whether high footfall streets – such as Friar Gate – now require extra protection measures for pedestrians.

Conservative councillor Steve Hassall has written to council leaders and Derbyshire police chiefs calling on the situation to be closely examined.

The Allestree councillor told officials that some of the public response following the incident suggested “a lack of confidence that sufficient preventative measures are currently in place within our city centre”.

He has called for “a targeted assessment of Friar Gate and similar locations for hostile vehicle mitigation, using design-led solutions that complement the public realm”.

Every peaceful public venue now requires battlefield prep.

Authorities, meanwhile, are just keeping an open mind and doing their damnedest to keep a lid on it.
