Kirk Cousins Lands in Las Vegas as Raiders Make a Veteran Move Ahead of Draft

Kirk Cousins has agreed to a contract with the Las Vegas Raiders, according to the veteran quarterback’s agent, giving the franchise an experienced option at the position less than a month after Cousins was released by the Atlanta Falcons. The agreement was reported Thursday, April 2, though the financial terms were not immediately available.

The move drops Cousins into one of the more watched quarterback situations in the league. Las Vegas is widely expected to select quarterback Fernando Mendoza with the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL draft later this month, which means the Raiders now appear set to add both a veteran starter option and a possible long-term successor in the same offseason.

Cousins arrives in Las Vegas after a short and uneven run in Atlanta. The Falcons released him two years after signing him to a four-year, $180 million contract, ending a partnership that never fully settled after Atlanta drafted quarterback Michael Penix Jr. just six weeks after bringing Cousins in. According to the report, that draft move caught Cousins by surprise.

Here’s What They’re Not Telling You About Your Retirement

Last season, Cousins completed 61.7% of his passes for 1,721 yards, with 10 touchdowns and five interceptions. His 47.6 QBR tied him for 22nd in the league with Bryce Young, reflecting a season that produced flashes but not enough consistency to lock down his place in Atlanta’s long-term plans.

Now the next chapter starts with a Raiders team still trying to stabilize the most important job on the field. Las Vegas has cycled through quarterback questions for multiple seasons, and adding Cousins gives the club a proven veteran with four Pro Bowl selections on his résumé, even if he is no longer arriving with the kind of expectations that followed him earlier in his career. He turns 37 this year and joins a team that could still use the top pick on a quarterback, making this one of those NFL arrangements where the present and future may be sharing the same meeting room from day one.

The deal also gives Cousins a fast reset after Atlanta moved on. Rather than sitting deep into the offseason waiting for injuries, camp battles or desperation to open a door, he now lands with a franchise that clearly wanted another established arm in the building before the draft. Whether that makes him a bridge starter, a competition piece or an insurance policy for a rookie, the Raiders have added a quarterback with significant starting experience and dropped him into one of the league’s most scrutinized roster decisions.

For now, the contract terms remain unknown. But the headline is simple enough: Cousins is headed to Las Vegas, the Raiders have made their veteran quarterback move, and the draft still looms over everything that comes next.
