An armed citizen in the Charlotte, North Carolina area drew his gun and shot at a home intruder early Wednesday morning, and is now speaking out about his actions.

The homeowner, who declined to give his name for obvious reasons, spoke to WSOC-TV in Charlotte, and honestly, TV station did a good job of laying out the events without hyperbole or drifting into anti-2A bias.

The homeowner says he and his partner woke up to the sound of loud banging. He grabbed his gun and left his bedroom, and almost immediately encountered the intruder in the hallway.

“You don’t know how many people it is; you don’t know what their intentions are; you don’t know anything,” the homeowner said. “You just know somebody’s breaking in, so all you can do at that moment is protect yourself, you know? I didn’t have any hesitation. As soon as I knew someone was coming in, I just let it fire, let it go.”

The suspect ran away, and the couple then secured themselves in a bathroom until police arrived. So far police haven’t made any arrests, and the homeowner isn’t even sure if he hit the suspect.

It would be easy to criticize this guy for not being a better shot, and maybe in hindsight he’s thinking about what he could do better/differently. The important thing, though, is that he made the threat to himself and his family disappear.

“He saved my life, saved my dog’s life,” the homeowner’s partner said. “I couldn’t ask for a better significant other in this situation.”

I love that quote, and I’m glad WSOC decided to include it. How many times have we heard anti-gunners say that we care more about firearms than our family or little kids? The truth is that most people own guns because they care about human life, and not just their own. I didn’t become a gun owner until I became a father, and I’m hardly the only guy whose perspective changed once he became responsible for more than just himself.

I’m not saying it’s only up to the menfolk to defend the homestead, mind you. To paraphrase, God created humankind, and Sam Colt made us equal. Frankly, my late wife was a better shot than I am, and she was more than capable (and ready) to protect her family if need be. I don’t know if the homeowner’s partner is comfortable with handling a firearm, but if not I hope that this scary experience prompts them to be able to protect themselves, their dog, and their partner too if the need arises.

WSOC went on to note that under North Carolina law, people are allowed to use deadly force against an intruder, with no duty to retreat. Importantly, they didn’t follow that up with any kind of comment by gun control activists warning that having a gun in your home makes you a jillion times more likely to be hurt with a firearm or other nonsense like that.

The truth is that if you follow the basic rules of gun safety you have less to be worried about with your firearms than you do with your chef’s knives in your kitchen. And while those knives have their purpose, so too does a handgun, rifle, or shotgun that’s meant for self-defense… as this North Carolina homeowner demonstrated to friends, neighbors, and the WSOC viewing audience.
