President Donald Trump on Monday endorsed Steve Hilton in California’s upcoming gubernatorial race, throwing his support behind the former British government aide and current media figure as the contest begins to take shape, as reported by The New York Post.

Hilton, who holds dual nationality, previously served as director of strategy to former British Prime Minister David Cameron.

He was considered one of Cameron’s closest advisers before leaving his role at Downing Street in 2012 and relocating to California.

In a statement posted on Truth Social, Trump announced his endorsement of Hilton, highlighting their longstanding relationship and expressing confidence in his candidacy.

“I have known and respected Steve Hilton, who is running for Governor of California, for many years … With Federal help, and a Great Governor, like Steve Hilton, California can be better than ever before! Steve Hilton has my COMPLETE & TOTAL ENDORSEMENT,” Trump said.

California’s gubernatorial race will follow the state’s open primary system, in which the top two finishers in the June 2 primary advance to the general election in November, regardless of party affiliation.

Early polling indicates a competitive field, with Hilton and Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco among the leading Republican candidates.

On the Democratic side, contenders include U.S. Representative Eric Swalwell, former U.S. Representative Katie Porter, and billionaire activist Tom Steyer.

Both Hilton and Bianco have expressed support for Trump while focusing their campaigns on issues specific to California, including crime and taxation.

Those topics are expected to play a central role as candidates seek to appeal to voters across the state.

Current Governor Gavin Newsom, who has held office since 2019, is not eligible to seek a third term under California law, leaving the race open without an incumbent.

The last Republican to serve as California governor was Arnold Schwarzenegger, who held the position from 2003 to 2011.

Hilton’s entry into the race, along with Trump’s endorsement, adds another dynamic to a contest that includes candidates with experience in law enforcement, federal office, and business.

With months remaining before the primary, the field is expected to continue evolving as candidates compete for voter support.
