Sports commentator Stephen A. Smith is pushing back on recent calls from political figures advocating for the use of the 25th Amendment against President Donald Trump, arguing the idea is not grounded in political or constitutional reality.

Smith addressed remarks from Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene and others who have suggested invoking the amendment, saying those pushing the idea are promoting something that is unlikely to happen.

“And unlike Marjorie Taylor Greene,” Smith said, “or a bunch of people on the right bloviating talking out of both sides of their mouth,” he added, “knowing that they’re pushing for something that will never happen.”

He specifically pointed to calls for invoking the constitutional provision designed to remove a sitting president from office.

“Meaning invoking the 25th amendment,” Smith said, before adding, “that ain’t gonna happen as long as he’s alive and breathing.”

Smith argued that President Trump will remain in office through the end of his term.

“Donald Trump’s gonna be the president until the end of the year 2028,” he said.

“It’s just a fact.”

He then dismissed the likelihood of the amendment being used.

“The 25th amendment will not be executed,” Smith said. “Stop it.”

Smith also referenced broader political rhetoric surrounding the issue, including statements attributed to Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker, before dismissing those arguments as overblown.

“We can on America. We cannot kill an entire civilization,” Smith said. “This is evil and madness.”

He continued, “Yeah, yeah, yeah. Illinois, Lieutenant Illinois Governor, JB Pritzker,” adding, “this is not foreign policy.”

Smith characterized the argument as exaggerated.

“It’s a deranged madman threatening to wipe out an entire country,” he said, before quoting the push for action: “It’s past time. The 25th amendment must be invoked.”

He responded directly to those calls.

“Stop, stop it,” Smith said. “All you’re showing is how useless you are.”

Smith emphasized that the constitutional process required to invoke the 25th Amendment is complex and difficult to execute.

“To invoke the 25th amendment,” he said, “you’re going to have to get the Vice President to sign off,” adding, “the Republicans in the House to sign off, cabinet members to sign off.”

He noted that the process would involve formally declaring the president unfit for office.

“Basically declaring him unfit,” Smith said.

Smith added that such a move would likely be challenged by the president.

“It’s something the President is fully capable of fighting by saying he’s not unfit,” he said.

He concluded by pointing to the historical precedent surrounding the amendment.

“And as a result,” Smith said, “it’s a reason why it’s never been exercised in American history.”

Smith closed his remarks with a final dismissal of the idea.

“Stop it.”
