A Florida college student has been indicted on multiple charges following the death of her newborn child, as investigators detailed evidence they say was uncovered during the case, including internet searches and images found on her phone, as reported by Fox News.

Anne Mae Demegillo, 20, was indicted by a grand jury Monday on charges of first-degree murder, aggravated child abuse, and failure to report a death with the intent to conceal or alter evidence, according to reports from FOX 13.

Demegillo had previously been arrested in March on a charge of aggravated manslaughter of a child in connection with the death of her newborn daughter, according to a statement from the State Attorney for Florida’s 7th Circuit.

Prosecutors allege Demegillo gave birth in a toilet inside her home and allowed the baby to drown.

Investigators say she then cleaned up before taking additional steps after the incident.

According to the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office, Demegillo later placed the baby in a duffle bag in her closet and “went about her normal daily routine.”

Authorities allege she returned later in the day and buried the remains in a shallow grave.

Law enforcement officials said they uncovered several searches on Demegillo’s phone during a monthlong investigation, including queries for “newborn premature babies,” “Palm Coast OBGYN,” and “foods to decrease fertility.”

Investigators also said the phone contained photos of Casey Anthony, who was acquitted in 2011 in the death of her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee.

Authorities were first called to Demegillo’s home on March 6 after a request for a welfare check.

According to investigators, a caller reported receiving messages from Demegillo indicating she had secretly been pregnant and had delivered a child at home.

Police said the messages suggested the baby was “born alive and crying, but Demegillo had done something to the infant.”

When officers spoke with Demegillo, she allegedly told them she was “not sure she was pregnant but began experiencing severe abdominal pain” in the early hours of March 5 before delivering the child in her bathroom toilet.

Although Demegillo allegedly claimed she believed the newborn was already dead, authorities stated that “detectives determined that Demegillo knowingly and purposefully allowed the newborn to drown in the toilet.”

Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly commented on the case in a statement.

“This is one of those tragic cases that shock you to your core that a mother would allow a newborn to die because the newborn was a distraction to her life,” Staly said.

“It’s hard to comprehend how a mother would choose to watch their infant drown instead of lifting the baby out of the toilet.”

Demegillo later turned herself in to the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility, where she is being held without bond.

During a court appearance last month, her attorney argued that the incident should be considered an “isolated episode” and cited her lack of prior convictions or violent history as a reason she should not remain in custody, according to FOX 35.

“I don’t know how long she will survive,” defense attorney Michael Politis said. “It’s not necessary to incarcerate her.”

Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing. The State Attorney for Florida’s 7th Circuit and Demegillo’s attorney did not immediately respond to requests for additional comment.
