CNN host Michael Smerconish on Saturday criticized ongoing calls from Democrats to impeach President Donald Trump and invoke the 25th Amendment, challenging claims that the president is mentally unfit to serve.

Smerconish addressed the issue during his program, pointing to what he described as a recurring pattern of rhetoric from Democrats that has persisted for years.

He noted that discussions about impeachment and the 25th Amendment have been raised repeatedly in connection with Trump, including before he first took office in 2017.

During his remarks, Smerconish referenced a dinner that comedian Bill Maher had with Trump at the White House last spring.

The meeting drew reactions from commentators on the left, including a New York Times piece by Larry David titled “My Dinner with Adolf.”

“In a choice between two of my favorite comedians, I stood with Maher on [the] theory that it’s better to have dialogue and to break bread than to demonize,” Smerconish said, noting that Maher returned to television afterward and continued to criticize Trump.

Smerconish’s comments came after recent developments tied to U.S. actions involving Iran, which prompted renewed discussion among Democrats about impeachment and the 25th Amendment.

The developments followed Trump’s posts on Truth Social during the conflict.

According to reporting referenced by Smerconish, Pakistan brokered a two-week ceasefire shortly before a deadline set by Trump.

The ceasefire occurred approximately 90 minutes before that deadline.

Smerconish cited a New York Times report detailing internal discussions within the Trump administration ahead of a decision to conduct a strike in Iran.

The report described disagreements among senior officials and outlined the deliberations leading up to what was described as “Operation Epic Fury.”

According to the report, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu supported taking action, while several U.S. officials raised objections.

CIA Director John Ratcliffe dismissed proposals related to regime change as unrealistic, Secretary of State Marco Rubio rejected them, and Vice President J.D. Vance expressed opposition to military action.

The report indicated that new intelligence created urgency by identifying an opportunity to target Iran’s leadership.

Diplomatic efforts led by Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner were described as unsuccessful, with both reporting that Iran was not negotiating in good faith.

Smerconish noted that Trump held a meeting on February 26 in the Situation Room to hear arguments from advisers.

According to the account, Vance voiced concerns about a strike but deferred to the president, while Ratcliffe presented intelligence findings.

Legal and military officials were said to have confirmed the viability of the plan.

The decision to proceed was made as a deadline approached.

According to the report, Trump approved the operation aboard Air Force One, 22 minutes before the cutoff.

Smerconish used the account to argue that the decision-making process described in the report did not support claims that Trump acts impulsively or lacks deliberation.

“It shows airing of competing views, some open to dissent, reliance on legal counsel, and a deliberative process, not the impulsivity with which Trump is so often associated,” Smerconish said.

“There’s nothing in the Times behind closed doors account of an unstable Trump at the same time that he was playing the madman card in public.”

Smerconish continued, quoting a characterization of Trump’s approach: “It’s not that there’s a method to his madness, it’s that the madness is his method.”

He also addressed broader claims about Trump’s ability to govern, referencing both the New York Times report and reactions from critics.

“Patience, process, and genuine deliberation. He went around the table. He heard the dissent. He consulted the lawyers; he made a hard call under enormous pressure. And 90 minutes before his own deadline, a ceasefire materialized,” Smerconish said. “That’s not nothing, and it’s certainly not the behavior of someone who needs the 25th amendment invoked or warrants impeaching.”

The comments came amid continued debate over Trump’s leadership and renewed calls from some Democrats to pursue impeachment or invoke constitutional measures related to presidential fitness.
