A Michelin-starred chef in Sacramento is facing a series of allegations from former employees as he moves ahead with plans to expand his restaurant operations in California’s capital, as reported by The New York Post.
Chris Barnum-Dann, the owner of Localis and Betty Wine Bar + Bistro, has been accused in multiple social media posts of workplace misconduct, including sexual harassment, verbal abuse, belittling staff, paranoid behavior, and wage-related violations.
The claims, which span more than a decade, first appeared in March on Reddit forums before spreading to Instagram, according to a report by The Sacramento Bee.

Several individuals who identified themselves as former employees posted detailed accusations online.
Here’s What They’re Not Telling You About Your Retirement
“Former employee here. All have to say is that I’ve been waiting to see this man get what he deserves for years,” one person wrote in a Reddit thread.
“It’s been excruciating to watch him get so many accolades and awards while knowing what a fraud and a complete POS he truly is. Chris is abusive, hateful, narcissistic, probably a drug addict – but definitely a complete creep. He sexually harassed me and others every day while I worked there.”
Another commenter claiming to be a former employee described alleged labor violations, writing, “Wage Theft & Labor Violations -Denied legally required breaks -Manipulated or reduced overtime pay – Withheld tips or misrepresented them as gratuity – Cash tips were routinely taken and not distributed to staff.”
The allegations gained wider attention after Barnum-Dann announced plans to open four additional restaurant locations in Sacramento.

His flagship restaurant, Localis, opened in 2015 and has held a Michelin star since 2022. Barnum-Dann was also named Michelin’s California 2025 Sommelier Award winner.
In response to the accusations, Barnum-Dann addressed the situation in a public statement posted to Instagram, where comments were disabled. He acknowledged the concerns but did not directly address specific claims.
“I am aware of concerns and claims that have been raised, and please know I take them seriously,” he wrote.
“Out of respect for everyone involved, I am taking time to listen, pray, and seek appropriate guidance so that I can respond thoughtfully and responsibly.”
Barnum-Dann has denied the allegations of sexual harassment. In a statement provided to Sacramento outlet Abridged, he said, “These accusations are simply not true.”
He added, “The individuals who are accusing me of sexual harassment have been spreading these things and worse since our employer-employee relationships soured for various reasons years ago.”
The situation comes as the restaurant industry continues to face scrutiny over workplace conditions, particularly within high-end dining establishments.
The Sacramento case follows other high-profile incidents involving prominent chefs and allegations from former staff.
Earlier this year, chef René Redzepi stepped down from his Copenhagen restaurant Noma after multiple former employees accused him of physical and verbal abuse.
The claims included allegations of punching staff, jabbing them with kitchen tools, and fostering a workplace environment characterized by long hours and mistreatment.
The controversy drew attention during a Los Angeles pop-up event and led to protests and sponsor withdrawals, contributing to broader discussions about conditions within the fine-dining industry.
In Sacramento, Barnum-Dann’s situation continues to develop as his business expansion plans move forward and the allegations circulate online. No legal action related to the claims has been publicly confirmed.
