Authorities in Suffolk County, New York, have launched a homicide investigation after the body of an adult woman was discovered floating in the Long Island Sound on Monday evening, as reported by The New York Post.

According to the Suffolk County Police Department, officers were dispatched to Lloyd Harbor Road in Lloyd Harbor at approximately 7:45 p.m. after a 911 caller reported seeing a body in the water.

When police arrived on the scene, they confirmed the presence of a deceased woman floating in the sound.

Emergency responders recovered the body from the water, and officials said the victim has not yet been identified.

The circumstances surrounding her death remain unclear, and authorities have not released additional details about how long the body may have been in the water prior to discovery.

The Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner is expected to determine both the identity of the woman and the official cause of death.

Investigators have not indicated whether there were visible signs of trauma or foul play at the time of recovery, but the case has been assigned to the Suffolk County Homicide Squad.

The decision to involve homicide detectives signals that investigators are treating the case as potentially suspicious while awaiting further forensic findings.

Authorities have not confirmed whether the woman is believed to be from the local area or if she may have come from another location along the shoreline.

Lloyd Harbor, located along the northern edge of Long Island, is typically a quiet residential area known for its waterfront views and limited public access points.

The discovery of a body in the sound has drawn attention from residents and raised questions about how the incident occurred.

Police have not released a timeline of events leading up to the discovery or indicated whether there are any known witnesses beyond the individual who made the initial 911 call.

It is also unclear whether surveillance footage from nearby homes or roadways may play a role in the investigation.

Authorities are urging anyone with information related to the case to come forward.

Suffolk County Police have asked members of the public to contact Homicide Squad detectives directly at 631-852-6392 with any details that could assist investigators.

At this stage, officials are focusing on identifying the victim and determining the cause and manner of death.

Additional updates are expected once the medical examiner completes an initial examination and investigators gather more information.

The case remains active, and no suspects have been publicly identified as of Monday night.
