The Walt Disney Company has filed confidential permits tied to future demolition work at Disney California Adventure, signaling early steps toward a planned Avatar-themed expansion at the Anaheim park, as reported by The New York Post.

According to reports first identified by Theme Park IQ and later confirmed by the Orange County Register, the permits involve structures connected to the “Monsters Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue” attraction as well as the nearby Hollywood Lounge quick-service location.

The filings are part of long-term planning for redevelopment within the park’s Hollywood Land area.

Disney officials acknowledged the permits but emphasized that the work is still in preliminary stages.

Theme Park IQ, which tracks park updates and construction activity, noted that the filings are early in the process and indicated that immediate changes are not expected.

The development comes even as the existing Monsters Inc. attraction is scheduled to remain open for several more years.

Disney previously confirmed the ride will continue operating until 2027, extending its timeline beyond earlier expectations that it could close in 2026.

The decision to keep the ride open longer is intended to maintain a balance of attractions within the park while planning and early development for the new project continues.

The upcoming expansion is expected to be themed around the Avatar film franchise created by filmmaker James Cameron.

Disney has indicated the new area will draw from multiple entries in the series, including “The Way of Water” and future films that are currently in development.

Plans for the attraction include a boat-based ride that will take guests through a bioluminescent rainforest environment inspired by the fictional world of Pandora.

Concept art released for the project depicts large-scale rock formations, waterfalls, and illuminated cave-like structures, similar in scope to the Pandora-themed land currently operating at Walt Disney World in Florida.

While the permit filings suggest forward movement, construction timelines for the Avatar expansion remain flexible. Based on current projections, the new attraction is not expected to open until at least 2028 or 2029.

The redevelopment of Hollywood Land is part of Disney’s broader efforts to expand and refresh its theme park offerings, particularly by incorporating popular film franchises into new attractions.

No immediate closures or construction disruptions have been announced, and Disney has not provided a detailed schedule for when demolition or major building phases will begin.
