A delegation of left-wing activists from North America and Europe traveled to Cuba over the weekend, drawing criticism from Cuban exiles and observers who pointed to the contrast between the visitors’ accommodations and the country’s ongoing economic crisis, as reported by the New York Post.
The group, known as the “Nuestra America Convoy,” arrived in Havana by air, sea, and land. Organizers said the effort was intended to deliver 20 tons of humanitarian aid and protest what they described as a United States oil blockade on Cuba.
The convoy included political activists, social media figures, and members of organizations aligned with socialist movements.
Among those participating was streamer Hasan Piker, who has a following of 1.6 million on Instagram. Piker broadcast from Havana on Saturday, stating he would be producing “content” during the trip.

Also present was Isra Hirsi, the 23-year-old daughter of Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn), along with members of the Democratic Socialists of America affiliated with New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani.
The delegation included representatives from groups such as the People’s Forum and Code Pink. Both organizations have been identified by the U.S. State Department as connected to Chinese influence operations. Code Pink co-founder Jodie Evans was photographed in Havana alongside Piker.
Reports indicated that some members of the convoy were staying at the Gran Hotel Bristol Meliá Collection, a five-star hotel where nightly rates range from $130 to $520. Others were seen traveling in air-conditioned buses and attending meetings with Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel at the Palacio de Convenciones.
The visit came during a period of severe strain for Cuba’s infrastructure. Cuban officials reported a nationwide blackout earlier in the week, affecting large portions of the island’s population of approximately 11 million. Many residents have faced prolonged power outages, as well as shortages of food, water, and medicine.

The energy crisis has intensified in recent months. In January, President Donald Trump warned of tariffs against countries supplying oil to Cuba, which limited the island’s access to fuel.
Additionally, oil shipments from Venezuela were halted earlier this year after U.S. forces captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in early January. Cuban officials have said the country has not received oil shipments for more than three months.
Cuban exiles in the United States voiced anger over the delegation’s visit, describing it as disconnected from the reality faced by people on the island.
“While nearly the entire country is suffering from power outages lasting over 20 hours, the left is welcomed with air conditioning and wasteful electricity consumption,” said Mayra Dominguez, a Cuban living in exile in the U.S.
“More than 100 homes wouldn’t be without power today if the Castro regime didn’t spend on communist propaganda with the international left,” Dominguez said.
“This is a gigantic mockery of the entire Cuban people. The left visits Cuba as if it were a party at a zoo and they go to admire the misery from a luxury hotel. It is outrageou.”
The convoy was organized by Cuban politician Mariela Castro through a nonprofit called Progressive International. Mariela Castro is the daughter of former Cuban president Raúl Castro and the niece of Fidel Castro. Reports indicated that details on how the aid would be distributed remained limited.
One of the organizations involved in the aid effort is the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples, which has been identified by the CIA as a front for Cuban intelligence services.
The visit has also drawn criticism from Cuban nationals living abroad who say they are barred from returning to the island under the current government.
“After causing more than a million Cubans to leave in just five years and denying many the right to return to their own country, they are now open to a foreign humanitarian expedition,” said Cuban artist Salomé García Bacallao, who lives in Miami.
“If they get in, so will we,” she added.
