Colin McDonald announced the creation of a new federal initiative aimed at addressing healthcare fraud across multiple western states, citing data that shows a growing impact on taxpayers and federal programs.

The initiative, known as the West Coast Health Care Fraud Strike Force, will operate in Arizona, Nevada, and the Northern District of California.

It is being launched by the Fraud Division as part of a broader effort to combat fraud involving government healthcare programs.

McDonald described the purpose of the new strike force and called for support from those concerned about misuse of taxpayer funds.

“We welcome all who share our concern for taxpayer dollars to join us in this mission. And I am pleased to announce today a major new Fraud Division Initiative to Combat health care fraud, the creation of the West Coast Health Care Fraud Strike Force in Arizona, Nevada and right here in the Northern District of California,” he said.

He pointed to data indicating that the scale of the issue has reached a level requiring increased enforcement resources.

According to McDonald, “the data shows that the need for this new Strike Force is urgent and undeniable.”

The initiative is focused on cases involving fraud tied to programs intended to serve vulnerable populations.

McDonald said, “Health care fraud in these districts imposes an enormous and growing burden on American taxpayers as fraudsters exploit programs meant for the poor, needy, elderly and disabled.”

The strike force will address cases that have already drawn federal attention in recent years, including those involving Medicaid and emerging healthcare technologies.

“Some of the most significant Medicaid wound care and digital health technology fraud cases have been prosecuted in these districts,” McDonald said.

Federal prosecutors assigned to the initiative will come from the Fraud Division’s Health Care Fraud Section.

The staffing is intended to expand the capacity of existing U.S. Attorney’s Offices in the targeted regions.

McDonald said the new team will consist of at least 10 prosecutors who will work alongside local offices.

“This new regional strike force will be staffed by at least 10 prosecutors from the fraud divisions, health care fraud section, who will be a force multiplier for these US Attorney’s Offices to combat a health care fraud crisis that is robbing taxpayers and harming patients,” he said.

WATCH:

The launch of the strike force follows increased federal focus on identifying and prosecuting healthcare fraud cases involving both traditional billing schemes and newer digital platforms.

The effort is structured to coordinate investigations across multiple jurisdictions in the western United States.

The initiative expands the federal government’s existing network of healthcare fraud strike forces, which have been deployed in other regions to pursue similar cases involving Medicare, Medicaid, and related programs.

The new West Coast strike force is expected to operate through collaboration between federal prosecutors and investigative agencies, focusing on cases that involve significant financial losses and impact on patients.

McDonald’s remarks outline the scope of the effort and the role of federal prosecutors in addressing fraud affecting taxpayer-funded healthcare systems.
